The brigade emphasized its commitment to maintaining a high level of operational readiness and taking decisive action against any threats to security within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and its surroundings.

The warning was delivered on Saturday by the Commander of the Guards Brigade, Brigadier-General Adebisi Onasanya, during the annual ascent of Aso Rock in Abuja, an exercise marking the conclusion of the formation’s training activities for the year.

Onasanya described 2025 as a particularly challenging year for the brigade, highlighting that beyond its core responsibility of protecting the President, it undertook increased operational engagements across the FCT and neighbouring areas.

The commander noted that the brigade carried out multiple clearance operations in crime-prone locations, resulting in arrests, recovery of weapons, and neutralization of bandits.

“At the beginning of the year, we had a lot of bandits lurking around. We conducted a series of clearance operations from Bwari to Abaji, Gwagwalada, and parts of Niger State,” Onasanya said. “We made numerous arrests, recovered weapons, and neutralized several bandits.”

He added that criminal elements attempting to cause unrest in the FCT were apprehended and dealt with according to the law, stressing the brigade’s determination to prevent criminal activities from taking root in its area of responsibility.

Onasanya credited the brigade’s successes to sustained collaboration with other security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Department of State Services, and support from the Nigerian Navy and Air Force. He highlighted that inter-agency cooperation continues to strengthen security operations within Abuja and its environs.

Praising the officers and soldiers of the Guards Brigade, the commander noted that there were no issues related to discipline or commitment throughout the year. He described their dedication and professionalism as commendable.

Onasanya urged the troops to maintain their commitment in 2026, particularly in line with the President’s declaration of a state of emergency in the security sector.

“We have another year ahead of us. As we go into 2026, we must be even more committed,” he said. “In line with the President’s declaration of a state of emergency in the security sector, we must give our full support. As Guards Brigade, we are always ready and loyal to commit ourselves to the best of our ability.”

Looking ahead, Onasanya assured residents of Abuja and its environs that the brigade would continue to uphold a high level of operational readiness.

“No stone will be left unturned. Any bandits or criminals who think they can use our area of responsibility as a safe haven will not find it easy,” he said.

The Guards Brigade, responsible for protecting the President and critical national assets within the FCT and surrounding areas, reaffirmed its resolve to eliminate criminal activities and ensure a safer Abuja in 2026.

In a strategic move ahead of the 2027 general elections, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has officially declared that it will not field its own presidential candidate. Instead, the party is actively pursuing potential alliances with other political groups.

During the party’s 11th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja this Saturday, Acting National Chairman Bala Mohammed explained that this decision was made with the nation’s best interests at heart. He emphasized that the current state of Nigeria requires collaborative efforts rather than unnecessary political competition, stating, “It is not compulsory to field a presidential candidate just for the sake of it. We need to see those who have emerged from other political parties and determine whether they are credible, qualified and capable of leading Nigeria.”

Key takeaways from the announcement include:

  • Focus on Credibility: The NNPP plans to carefully vet candidates from other parties to identify a leader capable of addressing Nigeria’s pressing challenges.

  • Open to Alliances: While dismissing rumors of a specific pact with the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Chairman Mohammed confirmed the party is open to collaborating with any organization whose ideology aligns with the NNPP.

  • Reflecting on 2023: The leadership noted that the departure of their 2023 presidential flagbearer—whom they described as the most qualified candidate at the time—was a significant factor in the decision to forgo a solo bid in 2027.
