The Nigeria Police Force has rejected recent claims by the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Afam Osigwe (SAN), regarding the enforcement of the Motor Vehicle Tinted Glass Permit policy, describing the remarks as misleading and capable of undermining public order and national security.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Nivo News, the Force, through its Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, clarified on Friday that it remains fully committed to the rule of law, public safety, and judicial authority. Hundeyin stressed that the Nigeria Police Force operates strictly within the framework of the Constitution, extant statutes, and valid court orders, and does not act in contempt of the judiciary.

Countering suggestions that the tinted glass permit policy is discretionary or revenue-driven, the Force stated that the regulation is anchored in law, specifically the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act of 2004. The Act empowers the Inspector-General of Police to issue tinted glass permits to applicants with legitimate security or health-related justifications. Hundeyin emphasised that the policy exists to address public safety concerns, particularly the use of heavily tinted vehicles in crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, and terrorism.

The Police Force also refuted allegations that administrative fees collected through the automated permit system constitute revenue generation. Hundeyin explained that fees are applied solely to maintain the technology infrastructure, data security, and workflow systems, and clarified that the involvement of Parkway Projects Limited, a licensed payment service provider, is strictly for processing transactions under government supervision.

Highlighting reforms under the automated system, the Force said the platform ensures nationwide standardisation, improves vetting, and integrates security innovations absent in the old manual process. Hundeyin added that previous voluntary suspension of enforcement was a gesture of goodwill and not judicially mandated, stressing that no court has issued a restraining order against the Police regarding the policy.

The Force warned that while a small percentage of motorists may use tinted glass for privacy or aesthetic reasons, public safety cannot be compromised. Hundeyin assured that enforcement would remain professional, rights-compliant, and that any officer found guilty of misconduct would face disciplinary action. The Inspector-General of Police reiterated the Force’s commitment to accountability, professionalism, and respect for judicial processes as ongoing cases are resolved.
