The hospital’s Public Relations and Protocol Unit, led by Usman Koli, disclosed that the fraud was uncovered by the institution’s SERVICOM Unit during a routine surveillance exercise, resulting in the arrest of an impostor defrauding patients and their families.
The suspect, described as an elderly man appearing calm and unsuspecting, was apprehended during a night surveillance operation after collecting ₦45,000 from relatives of a patient with gunshot injuries. Investigations revealed that the man demanded ₦5,000 for a hospital smart card and ₦40,000 for drugs. While the smart cards are issued free of charge and the actual cost of the drugs was ₦18,150, the excess sum of ₦27,000 was recovered, and the suspect has been handed over to the police for further investigation and prosecution.
The Chief Medical Director of ATBUTH, Prof. Yusuf Bara, commended the SERVICOM team for their vigilance and reiterated the hospital management’s zero tolerance for extortion, impersonation, and other fraudulent activities. He urged patients and the public to remain vigilant, report any suspicious demands to SERVICOM desks or relevant authorities, and assured that the hospital would continue to strengthen surveillance measures to safeguard patients and ensure transparency.
The hospital also warned against individuals impersonating hospital staff to solicit money under the pretense of facilitating appointments or employment, emphasizing that no staff member or individual is authorized to collect any form of payment or inducement. Members of the public who have been approached or have made payments are encouraged to report details immediately to the Public Relations and Protocol Unit to avoid legal consequences.
