Lawmakers have raised concerns over the selective implementation of President Bola Tinubu’s directive to withdraw police orderlies from Very Important Personalities (VIPs).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

President Tinubu had ordered the redeployment of around 11,000 police personnel assigned to VIPs nationwide to strengthen community policing and address manpower shortages.

During a plenary session, Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central) revealed that his only police orderly was withdrawn early Wednesday, while other VIPs, including ministers, political figures’ children, and even foreign business entities, continue to enjoy police protection.

Ningi criticized the uneven enforcement of the directive, urging that it be applied uniformly to ensure fairness. He emphasized that while he could protect himself, it was unjust for senators to be singled out and called on the Senate President to direct the Committee on Police Affairs to investigate the issue.

“The National Assembly should not be used as a scapegoat,” Ningi stated, highlighting that selective implementation undermines the policy’s credibility.

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin (APC, Kano North), presiding over the session, assured senators that the leadership was actively engaging the Presidency to seek exemptions and restore their police orderlies. He noted that providing protection to lawmakers aligns with international norms and that efforts to address the situation were ongoing.

The development adds to the national debate over the balance between VIP security and the need to reinforce police presence in local communities.
