Nasarawa Assembly Suspends Lafia Council Chairman Amid Speaker Impeachment Row.
The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has imposed a three-month suspension on Mohammad Haliru-Arabo, Chairman of Lafia Local Government Council, following allegations that he interfered in the council’s ongoing leadership crisis.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to reports, the decision, which has stirred political tensions in Lafia, was reached during a plenary session on Tuesday. Speaker Danladi Jatau announced the suspension after a motion of public importance was raised by Musa Ibrahim-Abubakar, Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
Jatau explained that the suspension was necessary to facilitate “a neutral and thorough investigation” into the contentious impeachment of the Speaker of the Lafia Legislative Council, an event that has recently sparked political unrest in the area. He emphasized that the matter posed a threat to the peace and stability of Lafia Local Government.
“Accordingly, the Chairman is hereby suspended for three months pending the outcome of the House Committee’s investigation,” Jatau stated. He further directed the Deputy Chairman, Uba Arikiya, to immediately assume leadership of the council during the suspension period and instructed the Clerk of the House to formally notify Governor Abdullahi Sule of the Assembly’s decision.
Several lawmakers, including Dr. Hajarat Danyaro Ibrahim, Mohammed Garba Isimbabi, Suleiman Yakubu Azara, and Larry Ven-Bawa, supported the suspension, accusing Haliru-Arabo of overstepping his authority by announcing the impeachment of the council’s Speaker—an action reserved for legislators.
“The Chairman has no authority to announce the suspension of a legislative Speaker. Such interference is dangerous and capable of igniting conflict within the council,” Ibrahim-Abubakar said.
The Assembly also resolved that the current leadership of the Lafia Legislative Council will remain unchanged until the investigation concludes.
In a separate legislative development, the House passed the first reading of a bill to repeal and re-enact the Nasarawa State Harmonisation and Administration of Revenue Law. Sponsored by Majority Leader Suleiman Yakubu Azara and seconded by Minority Leader Luka Iliya Zhekaba, the bill seeks to revamp the state’s revenue framework. The second reading is scheduled for December 16, 2025.
The session concluded after the adoption of both the suspension resolution and the first reading of the revenue bill.

Abioye Kamarudeen Adesina, the State Controller of Corrections, addressed attendees at the graduation event, noting that the initiative was put together through a collaboration between the Centre for Legal Support and Inmate Rehabilitation (CELSIR) and the Kastenbeelo Computer Training Institute.
According to Adesina, digital literacy will significantly enhance the participants’ prospects of securing a livelihood and achieving self-sufficiency upon re-entering society. He emphasized that rehabilitation is a foundational duty of the Correctional Service, asserting that individuals in custody must receive avenues to construct better futures.
