Dangerous Dependency? Former Winger Warns Chelle Against Building Nigeria Around Osimhen.
Former Nigeria winger Tijani Babangida has cautioned Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle against over-relying on striker Victor Osimhen as Nigeria prepares for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Babangida, in an interview with Tribal Football, described the team’s growing dependence on Osimhen as “dangerous,” stressing that such reliance could undermine Nigeria’s chances of winning their fourth AFCON title.
Osimhen, who has netted 31 goals in 43 appearances for the national team, is widely regarded as a pivotal figure. Yet Babangida highlighted a concerning trend: Nigeria’s record shows that while the team loses relatively few matches with Osimhen fit, their performance dips noticeably in his absence. With Osimhen on the pitch, Nigeria have lost five of their last 40 games. Without him, they have suffered 11 defeats in 29 matches, managing only nine wins.
The striker’s absence during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers underscored the issue. Nigeria failed to win any of their first four matches, recording three draws and a defeat. Osimhen’s return revitalized the team, scoring six goals in the final six qualifiers as Nigeria collected 14 points from 18. Despite his contributions, Nigeria fell short of automatic qualification, finishing behind South Africa, and later lost in the playoff against DR Congo after Osimhen was injured in the final.
Babangida argued that the Super Eagles must adopt a more balanced approach. “It is dangerous that the Super Eagles appear built around Victor Osimhen. When he was taken off against Congo, the team struggled immediately. That is very concerning,” he said.
He added that the mentality of the squad must change: players should understand that the team’s success does not hinge solely on one individual. “Any player given the nod to feature in any game must perform well and play as a team. Ambition alone is not enough if others are not ready to step up,” Babangida stated.
The former winger emphasized the need for mental preparedness across the squad. “We need a fully fit Osimhen, but we also need players who are mentally ready to win with or without him. Injury is part of the game, and Osimhen’s absence should never put the Super Eagles in disarray,” he said.
Nigeria will kick off their AFCON 2025 campaign on 23 December against Tanzania in Group C, which also features Tunisia and Uganda. The team is set to begin training camp in Egypt this weekend, with Osimhen expected among the first to report for duty.

The educational program formed part of the Nigerian Correctional Service’s (NCS) ongoing mission to provide inmates with practical competencies to aid their post-release productivity. Abioye Kamarudeen Adesina, the State Controller of Corrections, addressed attendees at the graduation event, noting that the initiative was put together through a collaboration between the Centre for Legal Support and Inmate Rehabilitation (CELSIR) and the Kastenbeelo Computer Training Institute.
According to Adesina, digital literacy will significantly enhance the participants’ prospects of securing a livelihood and achieving self-sufficiency upon re-entering society. He emphasized that rehabilitation is a foundational duty of the Correctional Service, asserting that individuals in custody must receive avenues to construct better futures. Furthermore, the Controller appealed for greater backing from non-governmental organizations, private entities, and other community partners to bolster these reintegration frameworks by supplying essential gear, instructional tools, and resources.
Addressing the newly graduated inmates directly, Adesina advised them to apply their newly gained expertise productively and maintain discipline to steer clear of behavior that might lead back to incarceration. Essential digital infrastructure, including laptops and a projector, was also donated to facilitate ongoing online learning for the inmates.
