“No More Coups In West Africa!”—Presidency Celebrates Tinubu’s Firm Action In Benin Crisis.
The Presidency has described Nigeria’s swift reaction to the attempted military takeover in the Republic of Benin as clear evidence of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to peace, stability, and the protection of constitutional governance across West Africa.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Nivo News, the response followed an unsuccessful coup attempt led by mutinous officers operating under the so-called “Military Committee for Refoundation,” headed by Lt. Col. Pascal Tigri, who briefly seized Benin’s state television station on Sunday in a bid to remove President Patrice Talon from office.
The Beninese government later confirmed that loyal security forces had regained full control and halted the mutiny. Responding to the incident, the Special Assistant to the President on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, wrote on that Nigeria’s position reflected President Tinubu’s unwavering defence of democratic rule in the region.
Olusegun noted that the events in Cotonou underscored Tinubu’s decisive role in safeguarding democratic institutions, stating that Nigeria acted promptly and firmly as the situation unfolded on December 7, 2025. He also emphasised that although Benin’s security agencies quickly suppressed the coup, Nigeria’s early condemnation helped influence the wider regional reaction.
He added that President Tinubu’s stance aligned with ECOWAS’ firm position against unconstitutional takeovers, recalling that as ECOWAS Chair, Tinubu has repeatedly insisted that coups must no longer be tolerated in West Africa.
According to Nivo News, the presidential aide stressed that Nigeria continues to champion dialogue, stability, and strict adherence to constitutional processes, reinforcing its longstanding status as a pillar of security within the sub-region.
While welcoming the failure of the coup, Olusegun warned that the incident is a reminder of the vulnerabilities confronting democratic transitions in the region. He noted that as Benin approaches its 2026 transition and as military interventions continue to cast shadows over parts of West Africa, President Tinubu’s firm defence of democracy remains a guiding force pushing the region toward a future where constitutional order is upheld without compromise.
