Philip revealed that the group of rebels, allegedly led by Colonel Pascal Tigri, invaded the residence of General Bertin Bada, who serves as Director of the Military Cabinet to the Head of State. The attack reportedly occurred just hours before the coup announcement on Sunday.

In a statement shared on , Philip noted that General Bada’s wife sustained severe injuries during the assault and later died from the wounds. His daughter was also wounded in the incident, which is believed to have taken place moments before the mutineers proceeded to seize the national television station as part of their abortive effort to topple the government.

In a related development, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has ordered the immediate deployment of its Standby Force to Benin following the attempted coup. The regional bloc explained in a statement issued on Sunday that the decision was made in accordance with the 1999 Protocol on Conflict Prevention, Management, Resolution, Peacekeeping, and Security.

ECOWAS added that the deployment, approved after consultations among Heads of State and Government, will include personnel drawn from Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire, and Ghana.
