The Federal Government has released ₦1 billion in compensation to residents of Cross River State whose properties were affected by the ongoing construction of the 750-kilometre Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.
The Federal Controller of Works in the state, Yinka Onafuye, confirmed the payments during an inspection of the Calabar-Itu Road and Sections 3A and 3B of the highway by the Minister of Works, David Umahi. Onafuye stated that compensation for verified claims has already commenced.
“Payment of compensation is ongoing. Farmlands and buildings affected by the project have been valued, and beneficiaries have started receiving payments through the banks,” he said. Between 700 and 1,000 residents across 12 communities in Akamkpa and Odukpani Local Government Areas have already received the funds.
The Minister of Works highlighted that the highway is being developed with modern travel needs in mind, featuring relief stations, solar-powered street lighting, CCTV surveillance, and emergency response infrastructure. He reiterated that the highway project reflects President Bola Tinubu’s vision, which has been in the making for over 27 years since his tenure as Lagos State Governor.
Dany Aboud, Managing Director of HITECH Africa Construction Company, assured that additional machines, manpower, and technical resources would be deployed to meet the 36-month project deadline. Meanwhile, Senator Mpigi Barinada, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works, described the project as massive, with costs justified by the challenging terrain and extensive earthworks required.
Dr Alex Egbona, a member of the House of Representatives representing Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency, added that residents were impressed by the pace and quality of the work, noting that the highway is expected to bring significant economic transformation to Cross River State and surrounding regions.
