“I Don’t Know My Exact Age” – Obasanjo Leaves Nigerians Guessing.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has once again stated that he does not know his exact age, explaining that he can only estimate it by comparing himself with surviving classmates from his school days. The former leader made the revelation on Sunday, December 7, during the Toyin Falola Interviews series, “A Conversation with His Excellency, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.”....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The discussion, moderated by Nigerian historian Professor Toyin Falola, also featured the Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Dr. Matthew Kukah, and former presidential candidate Professor Kingsley Moghalu. Obasanjo emphasized that his age can best be gauged by referencing his peers, some of whom are still alive. He said, “I don’t know my exact age but I could judge from those who were in school with me. I have given you an example of Olubara, who is still alive. I believe there are six of my classmates in secondary school that I know are still alive and none of them is less than 90 years of age. So I leave it to you to guess what my age could be.”
Obasanjo also reflected on the purpose of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, highlighting its role in preserving institutional memory and key historical documents. He explained that the library was established to address Nigeria’s longstanding challenge of poor record-keeping. “We have digitalised over 3 million materials. We still have about the same number, 3 million, to digitalise. The idea is when these materials are digitalised, people can have access to them. As document preservation, we preserve the past, take note of the present, and we want all these to inspire the future,” he said.
The library houses a wide array of items, including Obasanjo’s school records, letters written during his imprisonment, manuscripts, and even personal items such as crops he planted while in prison. Among the documents are a letter to the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, following the death of his son, and correspondence to his wife during his incarceration. Obasanjo reiterated that the library’s creation was motivated by the need to improve Nigeria’s culture of documentation.
