Bauchi Governor Shuts Schools Amid Threat Of Student Abductions.
Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has explained that the closure of all state, federal, and private schools, spanning primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions, was prompted by security agencies’ warnings.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Addressing journalists in Bauchi ahead of the State Executive Council meeting on Wednesday, the governor said intelligence reports indicated a potential threat of school invasions and student abductions in the state. He stressed that the closures were a precautionary measure to prevent such attacks.
“Yes, we closed our schools because the security agencies advised us to do so. They have more information than us, and even though I am the Chief Security Officer, I don’t have the personnel to act alone. They warned of possible abductions of our students, similar to incidents that have occurred in other states,” Mohammed stated.
The governor emphasized that the decision was preventive and aimed at ensuring safety, not inciting fear. He added that measures are being taken to secure schools, especially those that are difficult to access or more vulnerable.
“We have closed the schools, and we will ensure that such schools are fenced, possibly before the end of this year,” he said, adding that all schools in the state would eventually be equipped with security fencing and lighting. The recruitment of vigilantes will complement the Safe School Programme, as outlined by the Office of the National Security Adviser, with full implementation expected in Bauchi.
On the recent killing of five police officers in Darazo Local Government Area, Mohammed clarified that the incident was not a banditry attack, contrary to some media reports, but rather a community-related issue. “We had an incident in Darazo. While some reported it as banditry, it is actually a community issue. We are on the ground and will handle it with the police and DSS,” he assured.
