Southern Governors Demand State Police To Combat Rising Insecurity.
Governors of southern states in Nigeria have called for the creation of state police, arguing that it is essential to curb rising insecurity and strengthen grassroots security. The meeting brought together governors from Rivers, Abia, Ekiti, Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Edo, Oyo, and Cross River states, along with the deputy governor of Osun State. Speaking at the event, Governor Abiodun described the establishment of state police as a non-negotiable component of the region’s push for true federalism and localized security management.
Abiodun highlighted the increasing security threats and economic pressures across Nigeria, noting that decentralizing policing would allow states to take direct responsibility for protecting their citizens. He emphasized that southern Nigeria faces challenges including mass abductions in schools, attacks on religious centers, and rural criminality, which demonstrate the need for responsive and localized law enforcement.
“The creation of state police will not only improve intelligence gathering and early-warning systems but also enhance our ability to protect schools, farmlands, border communities, and critical infrastructure,” Abiodun said. He praised President Bola Tinubu for personally coordinating rescue operations during recent abduction incidents, describing the president’s actions as a demonstration of urgent and effective leadership.
Abiodun further stressed the importance of involving traditional rulers, who have close ties to grassroots communities, in building a secure and prosperous southern region. He called for a proactive and integrated security approach that includes intelligence-sharing, border protection, school safety systems, corridor surveillance, and active community participation.
