PDP Crisis Deepens as Wike, Makinde Camps Reject INEC’s Peace Move.

Published

on

The internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has shown no sign of easing, as factions aligned with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, have maintained their hardline positions despite recent intervention by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Nivo News, INEC stepped into the leadership dispute after summoning representatives of the rival factions led by Tanimu Turaki and Abdulrahman Mohammed to its headquarters in Abuja, following a series of formal communications from the party. The electoral body said its involvement was prompted by preparations for the Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections scheduled for February 21, 2026, as well as the Ekiti and Osun governorship polls fixed for June and July 2026.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, explained that the commission is constitutionally empowered to monitor the activities of political parties, stressing that the intervention was necessary to safeguard the electoral process ahead of the forthcoming polls.

Speaking after the meeting, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP faction aligned with Makinde, Ini Ememobong, said the party would continue to discharge its responsibilities and remain focused on repositioning itself for electoral success. He noted that the outcome of the engagement with INEC was an agreement that both factions must await the decision of the Court of Appeal on the pending cases, adding that the Supreme Court has previously cautioned INEC against determining the leadership of political parties.

Ememobong explained that the judgments delivered by Justices James Omotosho and Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court concerning the party’s convention are currently under appeal, making it imperative for all parties to wait for the appellate court’s ruling. He insisted that the matters in contention fall strictly within the internal affairs of the party, noting that while one court ruling advised INEC not to attend the convention and another called for the inclusion of Sule Lamido, neither nullified the exercise itself.

On his part, the Acting National Youth Leader of the PDP aligned with Wike, Timothy Osadolor, said the leadership dispute remains before the courts and cannot be resolved unless all parties withdraw their legal actions and acknowledge that no valid convention took place in Ibadan. He added that those who attended what he described as an “early Christmas party” in Ibadan were advised to either return fully to the PDP or align with other political platforms of their choice.

Osadolor further claimed that several participants in the Ibadan gathering had since defected to other political parties, citing the alleged defection of Governor Ademola Adeleke to the Accord Party and another governor to the All Progressives Congress. He maintained that only those who still genuinely identify with the PDP should lay claim to membership of the party.
