Onyeka Warns: Some Super Eagles Might Not See The 2030 World Cup.
Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has opened up about the emotional toll the team is experiencing following their failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Brentford star revealed that the disappointment felt by the squad mirrors the heartbreak experienced by Nigerians nationwide.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking to a British-Nigerian journalist at Casablanca Airport, Onyeka admitted the defeat to DR Congo in Sunday’s playoff final has been particularly difficult to handle. “We, the players, are hurting, just as much as Nigerians are hurting. Nigerians have every right to be very upset with us,” he said.
Onyeka emphasized the rarity of such an opportunity to compete on the world stage and acknowledged that for some players, 2026 could be their only chance at a World Cup. “It is very tough not to go to the next FIFA World Cup. Some of us may not be around in five years, in 2030. It’s painful,” he added.
Despite the setback, Onyeka stressed the need to focus on the future, pointing to the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in just over a month. “We need to get ready for that and do better than we did last time,” he stated.
The playoff clash with DR Congo had been grueling, with Nigeria drawing 1-1 after regulation time and enduring 120 minutes of play before the match went to penalties. Despite having some of the team’s most dependable penalty takers on the bench, including first-choice William Troost-Ekong, Nigeria missed three of their spot kicks. DR Congo, who even replaced their goalkeeper before the decisive penalty, held their composure to convert four penalties and secure a 4-3 shootout victory.
