Presidency Fires Back: No Opposition Can Stop Implementation Of New Tax Law.

Published

on

The Presidency has affirmed that no level of opposition resistance will prevent the implementation of the newly enacted tax reform laws in January, while dismissing claims that some provisions were secretly altered.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Nivo News, the tax reform laws, which faced strong opposition from federal lawmakers from northern Nigeria prior to their passage, are set to take effect on January 1, 2026. President Bola Tinubu signed four bills into law, marking what the government has described as the most significant overhaul of the country’s tax system in decades.

The Federal Government said the reforms are intended to simplify tax compliance, broaden the tax base, eliminate overlapping taxes, and modernise revenue collection across federal, state, and local governments.

Despite this, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and several civil society organisations have called for a suspension of the laws’ implementation. The call followed allegations by House of Representatives member Abdussamad Dasuki that the gazetted versions of the tax laws differed from what was debated, voted on, and passed by lawmakers, raising concerns that any discrepancies could undermine the legal validity of the laws.

Dasuki urged that all relevant documents, including harmonised versions, votes, and chamber proceedings, be presented to the Committee of the Whole for thorough review.

Responding to the criticisms, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi, told Punch that there is no evidence the laws were altered, describing the claims as opposition-driven attempts to create controversy. He stressed that the tax laws were enacted following due process and that relevant government agencies are already mobilised to ensure smooth implementation from January 1, 2026.

Ajayi added that the implementation committee has been working diligently for the past six months and will not be distracted by attempts to undermine the policy. He noted, “Opposition elements can say whatever they want, even when it is very obvious to every rational person that all they seek to do is create a toxic environment around policy issues.”

He further explained that the House of Representatives has already set up a committee, led by Chairman of the House Committee on Finance, James Faleke, to investigate the allegations, and insisted that the appropriate course of action is to allow the committee to complete its work and present its findings.
