House Orders Immediate Suspension Of WAEC’s Computer-Based WASSCE.
The House of Representatives has directed the Federal Government to immediately halt the West African Examinations Council’s (WAEC) plan to introduce Computer-Based Testing (CBT) for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), citing fears that the move could lead to mass failure, psychological distress, and potential fatalities among students.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Nivo News, the resolution was reached after the adoption of a motion of urgent national importance sponsored by Hon. Kelechi Nworgu during Thursday’s plenary session.
Presenting the motion, Nworgu noted that while CBT has been successfully implemented by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), the realities in Nigerian secondary schools make a similar transition for WAEC impractical at the moment.
He observed that most of the over 25,500 secondary schools in Nigeria, particularly those in rural areas, lack functional computers, internet facilities, and trained computer teachers needed to support the transition.
“Many students have never operated a computer before, yet they are expected to sit for up to nine subjects—including theory and practical papers—using a computer-based platform,” he warned.
The lawmaker expressed concern that enforcing the new system without adequate preparation could create a severe disadvantage for students in underdeveloped communities. He pointed out that inadequate power supply, poor internet connectivity, and insufficient ICT infrastructure pose major challenges to the feasibility of WAEC’s plan.
Nworgu cautioned that premature implementation could trigger widespread academic failure, frustration, substance abuse, and other social problems among young people.
To prevent such outcomes, he proposed that WAEC should defer the introduction of CBT until at least 2029 or 2030, allowing sufficient time for infrastructural development, teacher training, and student sensitisation.
Following deliberations, the House directed WAEC and the Federal Ministry of Education to suspend the planned CBT rollout and recommended that the Federal Government make provisions in the 2026 budget for the recruitment of qualified computer teachers, the establishment of ICT laboratories with internet access, and the installation of backup power systems in schools nationwide.
The House also mandated its Committees on Basic Examination Bodies, Digital and Information Technology, Basic Education and Services, and Labour, Employment and Productivity to liaise with relevant stakeholders and submit a comprehensive report within four weeks to guide further legislative action.
Lawmakers emphasized that while embracing digital education is essential for national progress, reforms must not be implemented at the expense of students’ academic success and mental well-being.
