Misinformation Alert: General Buratai Did NOT ‘Narrowly Escape’ Assault in June 2025

A Facebook post alleges that Tukur Buratai, Nigeria’s former Chief of Army Staff, narrowly escaped a Boko Haram attack in early July 2025.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

A Facebook post dated June 9 claims that Nigeria’s former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd), narrowly escaped death after his convoy was allegedly ambushed by heavy gunfire in Borno State.

Some versions of the post further allege that Senator Ali Ndume revealed the incident during an interview on Channels Television.

One such post reads: “Former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai escaped an attack from members of the Boko Haram terrorist group, according to lawmaker Ali Ndume.” It also attributes this quote to Ndume: “We are in a dire security situation. Just two days ago, Buratai was attacked at the front operations base in Borno. His team responded gallantly, but the insurgents managed to destroy several military assets.”

Several news platforms picked up the story, reporting that Boko Haram militants had attacked Buratai and his convoy in his hometown, citing Ndume as their source.

Boko Haram is an extremist Islamist group notorious for its violent insurgency in northern Nigeria. The town of Buratai, which shares the former army chief’s name, is located in Borno State in the country’s northeast—and is his hometown.

But did General Buratai and his convoy truly come under attack?

Not exactly. The town of Buratai was attacked—Buratai the man was not.

A fact-check by Africa Check revealed that Ndume’s interview, posted by Channels TV on YouTube on June 8, was widely misinterpreted. In the video, while discussing President Bola Tinubu’s first year in office, Ndume did reference an attack—but his words pointed clearly to Buratai town, not the former army chief.

Around the 13:17 timestamp, Ndume said: “We are in a dire situation. Even two days ago, Buratai was attacked. The front operation base in Borno—Buratai—was attacked. Our soldiers stood up to it, but the insurgents destroyed military assets.”

On June 9, Buratai issued a statement refuting the false reports. His spokesperson clarified that the retired general was in Abuja, not Borno, at the time of the attack.

“This baseless rumour is the product of reckless imagination by the purveyors of fake news—individuals intent on defaming him and spreading fear, confusion, and misinformation,” the statement read.

That same day, Senator Ndume also clarified the situation, stating that his comments had been misrepresented. He explained that he was referring to Buratai town—not the retired general himself.

“I’m surprised that the town Buratai could be confused with General Buratai, who is originally from there,” Ndume told reporters.

Conclusion:
The viral claim that General Tukur Buratai narrowly escaped a Boko Haram attack in June 2025 is entirely false. The confusion arose from a misinterpretation of Senator Ndume’s remarks about an attack on the town of Buratai—not the former army chief personally.

FERMA’s South-East 2 Zonal Director, Suleiman Mohammed Omonowo, issued the warning during an inspection of the project, cautioning against the burning of tyres during celebrations, which he said could damage the road surface.

He noted that destructive practices by some youths and community members often contribute to the early failure of road projects across the country.

“Our advice to road users, especially indigenes, is to protect the road from destruction. Let nobody come and destroy it or burn tyres in the name of celebration,” he said.

Omonowo said the Aba–Azumini highway was previously in a very bad condition before FERMA intervened, describing it as a death trap for commuters and residents.

He also expressed satisfaction with the quality of work done on the project, adding that drainage structures such as catch pits would help prevent flooding and extend the lifespan of the road.

According to him, the highway serves as a major link between Aba, several Abia communities, and Cross River State, carrying heavy traffic daily.

He urged local construction firms to improve on quality delivery to compete effectively with foreign contractors.

Meanwhile, the Federal Roads Maintenance Engineer in Abia State, Festus Okafor, said FERMA workers have not faced harassment or violence from residents during operations in the state.

Court Orders UI To Reinstate Students Suspended Over Fee Hike Protest.

Published

on

The Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, has ordered the University of Ibadan (UI) to reinstate three students suspended over their participation in a protest against tuition fee hikes.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Delivering judgment on Wednesday, Justice Nkeonye Maha set aside the decision of the university’s Central Student Disciplinary Committee, ruling that the students were denied fair hearing during the disciplinary process.

The court held that the failure to allow the students call witnesses and present evidence violated their constitutional right to fair hearing, rendering the sanctions against them invalid.

The affected students — Aduwo Ayodele, Mide Gbadegesin, and Nice Linus — were suspended on July 14, 2025, after taking part in a protest against increased school fees approved by the university’s governing council.

Dissatisfied with the suspension, they approached the court, arguing that the disciplinary proceedings breached their fundamental rights and due process.

They asked the court to quash the suspension, reinstate their studentship, and award damages for alleged rights violations.

In her ruling, Justice Maha agreed with their arguments, stating that the university’s actions failed to meet the standards of natural justice.

Following the judgment, rights group CAPPA hailed the decision, urging the university to comply fully, reinstate the students, and issue an apology.

The group said the ruling reinforces constitutional protections for freedom of expression and serves as a warning against the suppression of student protests in tertiary institutions.
