Soludo’s Victory Proves Nigeria Is Not Sliding Into One-Party Rule – Okechukwu
A founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Osita Okechukwu, has described the re-election of Anambra State Governor, Professor Charles Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), as a strong indication that Nigeria’s democracy remains vibrant and far from drifting toward a one-party system.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Nivo News, Okechukwu, who is also the immediate past Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), congratulated Soludo on his victory while commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for upholding democratic values. He noted that the outcome of the election debunked the widespread notion that the ruling APC, under President Tinubu, planned to manipulate the polls in its favor.
Okechukwu explained that despite recent defections from opposition parties to the APC, the success of APGA in the Anambra governorship election demonstrates that political diversity and freedom of choice remain intact in the country. He said the victory effectively silenced critics who alleged that Nigeria was sliding toward a one-party state under the APC-led administration.
He attributed the wave of defections across the political landscape to the opposition’s failure to respect zoning principles and to the significant achievements recorded by President Tinubu within his first three years in office.
The APC chieftain emphasized that Tinubu has always stood for plural democracy, recalling that the President belongs to a league of progressive leaders who believe that true democracy thrives on multiple political choices and competitive governance.
Responding to claims that Nigeria had become a de-facto one-party state, Okechukwu dismissed such notions as baseless, arguing that the country’s political history proves otherwise. He referenced past political alliances and movements, such as the coalition that halted former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s third-term bid and the rise of Peter Obi’s “Obedient Movement” in 2023, as examples of Nigeria’s ever-evolving democratic dynamics.
“If the APC truly wanted to confine Nigeria to a one-party state,” Okechukwu said, “it could have easily used its federal influence to displace Professor Soludo. But the fact that APGA won by a landslide clearly shows that our democracy remains competitive.”
He further recalled that political defections have long been part of Nigeria’s political culture, pointing out that during the PDP’s dominance, some party members once boasted of ruling for 60 years until a united opposition, led by Tinubu and the late President Muhammadu Buhari, broke that monopoly in 2015.
Okechukwu urged Governor Soludo to extend an olive branch to his opponents and ensure inclusive governance. He also thanked President Tinubu for ensuring a transparent and credible electoral process, describing it as a testament to the President’s commitment to liberal democracy.
