According to Nivo News, the academic expert emphasized that many African countries still lack structured sex education systems, unlike Europe and some parts of Asia, where comprehensive sexual education is well established in schools.
Prof. Arowojolu made the call while delivering the Seventh Aina Omololu-Mulele Endowment Annual Lecture in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos (UNILAG). His lecture, titled “Sexual and Reproductive Health Challenges among Adolescents in Low and Middle-Income Countries,” addressed the urgent need to strengthen adolescent health education.
He urged governments, schools, parents, and religious institutions to collaborate in creating an environment that encourages effective sexuality education and supports the mental and physical well-being of young people. The professor stressed that comprehensive sexual education and a nurturing environment can promote responsible sexual behaviour, reduce health risks, and enhance adolescent development.
Highlighting the growing challenges faced by adolescents, Arowojolu lamented the rising cases of teenage pregnancy, unsafe abortions, substance abuse, sexual violence, and early marriage. He also pointed out that misinformation from peers and social media further worsens these issues, often leading to long-term consequences.
The Vice Chancellor of UNILAG, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, commended the positive impact of the annual lecture on medical education and young doctors. Represented by Prof. Oluwole Familoni, Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the lecture series and former Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and Research), she also expressed gratitude to the Omololu-Mulele family for their continued contribution to medical advancement and societal development.
During the event, Dr. Godwin Oyewumi, a Senior Resident Doctor at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), received a ₦3 million research grant as the winner of the Abimbola Aina Omololu-Mulele Award. His award-winning research focused on “The effect of open myomectomy and uterine artery occlusion with tourniquet on ovarian reserve: A multicentre prospective longitudinal study in Lagos.”
