Haaland opened the scoring in the 19th minute, finishing a precise cross from Brazilian winger Savinho. The goal continued his remarkable scoring form across all competitions, bringing his tally to 15 goals this season. Bernardo Silva doubled City’s lead just before halftime after linking up with teenage midfielder Rico Lewis, ensuring a comfortable night for the defending champions at the Etihad Stadium.

City controlled the tempo from the outset, dominating possession with 62% and limiting Villarreal to few clear chances. New goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who joined the club in the summer, registered a clean sheet in his first European home appearance for the team. The win lifts City to seven points from their opening three matches in the Champions League league phase, keeping them on top of their group.

Pep Guardiola’s side looked composed throughout, balancing attacking flair with defensive discipline. Haaland’s first-half strike highlighted his instinctive finishing, as he met Savinho’s low cross with a clinical touch past Villarreal’s goalkeeper Filip Jörgensen. The Norwegian forward’s run of goals now equals Ronaldo’s 2018 streak for Real Madrid and Portugal, a milestone that underscores his growing reputation among Europe’s elite forwards.

After the match, Guardiola praised his striker’s consistency and mentality. “Erling’s hunger is what makes him special,” the City manager said. “He never stops pushing himself. To score in 12 straight games is not easy, but he focuses on the team first, and that’s what we value most.”

Villarreal, despite flashes of promise from forward Gerard Moreno, struggled to break down City’s organized defense. Their best chance came in the 67th minute when Alex Baena’s curling shot forced Donnarumma into a strong save. Beyond that, the Spanish side found few openings, with Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol commanding City’s back line.

Bernardo Silva’s goal, City’s second, came after a slick passing move that involved Lewis and Phil Foden. The Portuguese midfielder calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner, capping a dominant first half for the home side. In the second period, City shifted into control mode, maintaining possession and slowing the tempo to manage the game.

The victory solidifies Manchester City’s position as one of the tournament favorites once again. They are now unbeaten in their last 15 Champions League matches, a run that includes last season’s triumph. For Haaland, the goal continues a blistering start to the campaign that has seen him score in every game since August.

Villarreal’s coach Marcelino admitted his team struggled to match City’s intensity. “We faced one of the best teams in the world,” he said. “We tried to stay compact, but their quality in the final third made the difference.”

Manchester City will next travel to face Red Star Belgrade in their fourth Champions League

GLOBAL TERROR NETWORK ROCKED: ISIS Second-In-Command Eliminated In Joint U.S.-Nigeria Strike!.

United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio has formally announced a significant escalation in counterterrorism cooperation between Washington and Abuja, detailing a recent high-impact joint operation that resulted in the elimination of a top global ISIS leader within Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Rubio made these statements during a hearing before the House Foreign Affairs Committee regarding the State Department’s FY27 budget request, which was held on Wednesday in Washington, DC.

The U.S. official emphasized that the United States remains deeply concerned about the rising tide of violence in Nigeria, specifically highlighting attacks against Christians. He stated that this concern has translated into a new phase of active counterterrorism partnership with Nigerian authorities.

“We are now actively in counterterrorism cooperation with the Nigerian government and Nigerian security forces, including a joint operation a couple of weeks ago that took out the number two leader of global ISIS operating from inside of the country, and that continues,” Rubio informed the committee.

The operation, which was a coordinated U.S.-Nigerian assault on May 15, targeted the compound of Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki, identified as the second-in-command of global ISIS operations. The high-value target’s stronghold was located in the volatile Lake Chad Basin region.

Adding crucial context, U.S. Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth further confirmed that Al-Minuki was the primary figure responsible for directing and executing multiple attacks on Christian communities across Nigeria.

President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria had previously confirmed the death of Al-Minuki, noting that several of his top lieutenants were also neutralized in the precise mission. Tinubu expressed his strong desire for continued, decisive military strikes against all terrorist enclaves within the country.

Since the successful elimination of Al-Minuki, subsequent reports indicate that more joint U.S.-Nigerian operations have targeted and destroyed terrorist positions. Just days after the initial operation, Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters announced that a series of joint airstrikes in Metele, Borno State, had killed more than 20 ISIS/ISWAP fighters. Furthermore, on June 1, a separate airstrike in Arege, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State, conducted by the Nigerian military in collaboration with the United States Africa Command, resulted in the death of an additional 21 ISWAP insurgents.
