Former SPIP Chairman Raises Alarm Over Surge in Cult Killings in Cross River

Published

on

CALABAR, Nigeria — Former Chairman of the Special Presidential Investigation Panel for the Recovery of Public Property (SPIP), Okoi Obono-Obla, has raised concern over an alarming rise in cult-related killings and drug violence in Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area, and other parts of Cross River State in recent weeks.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Obono-Obla said the killings, which have claimed several lives in the past two months, show a disturbing pattern of organized and ruthless attacks. He identified one of the victims as Felix Ebri Inah, who was reportedly murdered along with several others. He added that a woman and her daughter were earlier caught in a crossfire between rival cult gangs.

“This is no longer random violence; it is coordinated, well-funded, and increasingly brutal,” Obono-Obla said in a statement. “If urgent steps are not taken, the situation could spiral out of control.”

Residents say fear has gripped Ugep and neighboring communities as cult clashes intensify, often linked to drug trafficking and territorial disputes. Many locals now stay indoors at night, and community gatherings have been suspended to avoid further bloodshed.

According to reports, the recent wave of violence has been traced to rival cult groups fighting for dominance. Some victims were reportedly attacked in their homes or ambushed on local roads, while others were targeted in public places. Witnesses said the attackers used dangerous weapons, including machetes and locally made guns.

Community leaders in Yakurr have appealed to the police and state government to deploy more security personnel to the area. They say the clashes are disrupting daily life and threatening local businesses, especially in Ugep, one of the largest towns in Cross River.

“This situation has gone beyond what our local vigilante groups can handle,” a community elder said. “We need stronger security presence and genuine efforts from the government to stop these killings.”

Cult-related violence has long been a problem in parts of Cross River State. In previous years, similar clashes between rival gangs have led to multiple deaths and forced residents to flee their homes. Security analysts say the issue is fueled by youth unemployment, drug abuse, and weak law enforcement.

Obono-Obla urged both state and federal authorities to treat the situation as a matter of urgent national concern. He called for a special task force to investigate the killings and dismantle cult networks operating in the area.

“The killings follow a clear pattern. It is time for a coordinated security response,” he said. “We cannot allow criminals to terrorize communities and destroy innocent lives.”

Police authorities in the state have yet to release official figures on the recent attacks, but sources say investigations are ongoing. The Cross River State government has also promised to strengthen security operations in rural areas affected by cult activities.

Residents are calling for peace and warning that continued violence could lead to an exodus from the affected communities. Business owners fear the unrest will scare away investors and deepen economic hardship in the region.

Obono-Obla’s warning adds to growing calls for decisive government action to end cult violence in Cross River. As the killings continue, many residents say they can only hope that authorities will act swiftly to restore peace and security across the state.

“We Will Rig You!”: Peter Obi Issues Explosive Warning To INEC Over Alleged Election Manipulation!.

Published

During a recent visit to Washington, D.C., Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), argued that the prevalence of election rigging in Nigeria is largely due to voters failing to actively defend their ballots. Obi emphasized that while candidates play a role in the process, credible outcomes ultimately depend on citizens remaining at their polling units to ensure votes are counted transparently. He criticized the “transactional” nature of Nigerian politics, suggesting that many voters prioritize other activities over the essential task of monitoring the electoral process. According to Obi, Nigeria’s primary challenge is poor political leadership, and he urged citizens to take collective ownership of their votes to demand the accountable governance required for the country to succeed.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has called for increased citizen involvement in protecting electoral integrity. During a recent trip to Washington, D.C., Obi stated that election manipulation persists because voters frequently leave polling stations before the counting process is completed. He argued that:

  • Voters must proactively defend their ballots at polling units to ensure transparency and prevent rigging.

  • Nigeria’s fundamental obstacle is a crisis of political leadership, rather than a lack of natural or human resources.

  • Real change requires Nigerians to move beyond passive participation and take active responsibility for the electoral process.
