KADUNA, Nigeria — Senator Sunday Marshall Katung, who represents Kaduna South Senatorial District, has condemned the killing of two police officers on duty at the Zonkwa Police Station in Zango Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Kaduna State Police Command confirmed that the officers were killed on Friday night when unknown gunmen attacked the station. The assailants reportedly entered the station around 9 p.m. and opened fire on officers on duty. Two officers, identified as DSP Monday Madaki and Inspector Bin Magaji, were shot and later confirmed dead at the hospital. The attackers escaped before reinforcements arrived.

Senator Katung described the attack as “wicked, barbaric, and reprehensible,” saying it was a direct assault on law enforcement and community peace. In a statement released on Saturday, he called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible.

“I strongly condemn this senseless and heartless attack on our gallant officers who were performing their lawful duty to protect lives and property,” Katung said. “This is not only an attack on the police but also on the peace and stability of our communities.”

He extended his condolences to the families of the slain officers and the Kaduna State Police Command. The senator urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could help in the investigation.

The Kaduna State Police Command said no weapons were stolen and no detainees were freed during the attack. It also confirmed that an investigation is underway to identify and arrest the perpetrators.

The attack has heightened fears in Southern Kaduna, a region that has experienced frequent violence, including killings, kidnappings, and bandit raids. Communities in Zango Kataf and surrounding areas have been under repeated assaults in recent months, prompting calls for stronger government response.

Senator Katung has previously raised concerns over the worsening security situation in the area. Earlier this year, he called for the establishment of more Forward Operating Bases to strengthen security presence and response in rural communities. He also emphasized that protecting citizens and security personnel must be the top priority of government at all levels.

“The safety of our people and those who defend them must never be compromised,” Katung said. “Government must provide better facilities, intelligence support, and protection for officers who put their lives on the line.”

Residents of Zonkwa described the slain officers as dedicated and disciplined men who were well respected in the community. Local leaders have urged the government to improve security infrastructure at police stations, especially in high-risk areas like Zango Kataf.

Security experts say attacks on police stations are becoming more common in Nigeria’s northern and central regions, where armed groups seek to weaken law enforcement and instill fear among residents. They warn that such incidents could embolden criminals if not swiftly addressed.

The police have increased patrols in and around Zonkwa, while investigations continue. Authorities have assured residents that measures are being taken to prevent a recurrence.

As the community mourns, Senator Katung said the government must act decisively to send a strong message that violence against law enforcement will not be tolerated. “We cannot allow criminals to intimidate our police or terrorize our people,” he said. “Justice must be done for the fallen officers, and peace must be restored.”

The killing of the two officers has left a deep mark on the Zonkwa community and reignited calls for urgent action to strengthen security in Southern Kaduna, where peace remains fragile.
