Speaking in a recent interview, Klopp said his discussions with Manchester United officials left him uneasy about the club’s direction at the time. He explained that the emphasis was on signing big-name players rather than building a football system he believed in.

“Because I was told things in the meetings that I didn’t like: ‘We’ll get all the players you want… we’ll get him, and him, and him,’” Klopp said. “And I was sitting there thinking, ‘Yeah, this is not my type of project.’”

He added that United’s idea was to bring back superstars such as Paul Pogba and Cristiano Ronaldo, something he felt would not help the team in the long run. “I didn’t want to bring back Paul Pogba. These things won’t work. I didn’t want to bring back Cristiano Ronaldo. This won’t help. Their idea was to bring the best players to the club, but they never brought up football,” Klopp said. “And then a pure football project came along — Liverpool.”
