Nigerian woman pays robbers ₦8,000 — and keeps her iPhones, wigs and bags
Nigerian woman transferred ₦8,000 to armed robbers who waited for her — then walked away without taking any of her iPhones, wigs or bags.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to the account, the woman made the payment after being confronted by the men. She then called a ride-share driver via the app InDrive, accused him of collaborating with the robbers, allowed him to drive her home and paid him ₦4,000. The robbers left without removing her valuables.
The incident highlights a growing trend of so-called “one-chance” robberies, where criminals target victims during transport or immediately before/after boarding vehicles.
According to sources familiar with the case, the woman was approached at night by an armed gang. They demanded money and threatened to take her valuables. Fearing escalation, she complied and transferred ₦8,000 into a bank account the robbers provided. However, no further items were taken. After the robbers left, she booked an InDrive ride, accused the driver of being part of the scheme, yet paid him ₦4,000 to take her home safely.
Police in Lagos and other cities have reported similar cases: victims boarding taxis or ride-shares then being robbed either of money, valuables or both. In one Lagos incident from 2022, a victim lost her savings of about ₦910,000 after “one-chance” robbers forced her off a vehicle.
In this case, what stands out is the low amount surrendered, the preservation of the valuables, and the inclusion of a ride-share driver in the sequence of events. While the driver’s involvement remains unverified, the woman’s account points to her suspicion of collusion.
Attempts to reach local police for comment on this specific incident were unsuccessful. Police often advise passengers to note vehicle registration, driver ID and share their journey details with friends or family. In the Port Harcourt area, police recently warned citizens to pay attention to the vehicle they are entering and send registration numbers to loved ones.
A crime analyst says this incident underscores how robbers are shifting tactics: rather than stealing large amounts or valuables outright, they may settle for smaller sums with fewer physical risks, and victims may elect to comply quickly rather than face violence. The fact that the woman kept her bags, wigs and iPhones may indicate the robbers judged the immediate money transfer sufficient to end the incident with minimal fuss.
In addition, the involvement of a ride-share driver introduces complexity: if the driver was indeed complicit, it represents a convergence of informal transport services and criminal schemes. If not, the woman’s decision to keep him in the sequence may illustrate the anxiety and uncertainty faced by victims during such events.
For non-native English speakers: the phrase “one-chance robbery” refers to an attack where the victim gets only one opportunity — for example while boarding or exiting a vehicle — and is quickly assaulted, robbed and dropped off. The term “ride-share driver” refers to a driver using an app (like InDrive) that connects them with passengers.
As next steps, police say victims should report the incident immediately, provide transaction records for any transferred funds, and request recovery of digital evidence such as bank alerts or CCTV footage. Ride-share platforms are also under pressure to improve driver vetting and journey monitoring.
In sum: a woman under threat transferred a modest amount of money, avoided loss of her valuables, and then sought safe transport home. The case serves as a reminder to travellers in Nigeria — and beyond — to remain alert, minimise cash or device exposure, and share journey details with trusted contacts.
