Lagos Influencer Sparks Debate After Calling ₦3,000 Shawarma at Item 7 “Too Cheap
Lagos-based influencer has stirred online debate after suggesting that a ₦3,000 shawarma sold by fast-growing restaurant chain Item 7 was “too cheap,” a remark that has since triggered accusations of classism and fueled discussions about Lagos’s obsession with luxury pricing.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The controversy began when the influencer, identified as Cyn, commented that the popular shawarma meal from Item 7 “felt too good to be true.” While she did not directly call for a price increase, her post quickly went viral, with many social media users accusing her of promoting what they called “faux classism.”
Critics said her statement reflected a wider culture in Lagos, where some residents associate higher prices with social status. “Lagosians have a knack for unnecessary inflation just to feel exclusive,” one user wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “They want to turn everything affordable into a luxury.”
Others, however, defended Cyn, arguing that her comment had been misinterpreted. “Only poor people get triggered by the idea of higher prices,” one supporter wrote. “If you can’t afford it, that’s not the restaurant’s fault.”
Item 7, which began at the University of Ilorin catering to students, has built its reputation on offering affordable meals. Founded in the Oke Odo area of Ilorin, Kwara State, the brand’s goal was to serve large portions at student-friendly prices. Over the years, it has expanded into Ibadan, Abeokuta, Akure, and Lagos, maintaining its affordability as a key selling point.
A plate of rice and chicken reportedly sells for about ₦3,000 — roughly the same as its shawarma — a price customers say is remarkably low compared with similar restaurants in Lagos.
Food industry observers say the viral debate exposes a deeper divide between Lagos’s growing appetite for exclusivity and Nigeria’s economic realities. “Lagos is a city where image often drives value,” said a food analyst, noting that many restaurant owners raise prices to appear premium. “Item 7 disrupted that by keeping meals within reach of ordinary people.”
Online, the argument has also reignited discussions about class perception and identity among young Nigerians. “People now think affordability equals inferiority,” a user commented. “But Item 7’s success shows quality and fairness can coexist.”
The restaurant has not released an official statement on the issue, but several customers at its Lagos outlet told reporters they hope management will not change its pricing model. “It’s one of the few places where you can still eat well without breaking the bank,” said Tolu Adebayo, a customer at the Lekki branch. “If they increase prices because of pressure, they’ll lose what makes them special.”
Social media discussions about the shawarma’s price have spread beyond Lagos. Users in Ogun State and Oyo State have jokingly urged the company to open more outlets in their cities before “Lagos people ruin it.”
Founded with a mission to make quality food affordable, Item 7’s steady expansion across southwestern Nigeria has been credited to its consistent menu and pocket-friendly prices. Some analysts believe that maintaining that brand identity will be crucial to its long-term success.
As of Tuesday, the debate remains one of Nigeria’s top-trending discussions on X, with thousands of posts under hashtags like #Item7, #LagosBaddie, and #ShawarmaGate.
Whether Item 7 will bow to social pressure and review its prices remains unclear. But for many Nigerians, the restaurant’s ₦3,000 shawarma has become more than just a meal — it’s now a symbol of the country’s ongoing struggle between affordability and the allure of status.
