VALLADOLID, Spain — Mikel Merino scored twice as Spain cruised to a 4-0 victory over Bulgaria in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at Estadio Municipal José Zorrilla on Tuesday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The win extended Spain’s perfect start to Group E, with four wins from four matches. Arsenal midfielder Merino opened the scoring in the 35th minute with a header from a Pedri cross. He doubled the lead in the 57th minute, again heading in a cross, this time from Alex Grimaldo.

Bulgaria’s hopes were further dashed when defender Atanas Chernev scored an own goal in the 79th minute. In stoppage time, Spain was awarded a penalty after Merino was fouled in the box. Mikel Oyarzabal converted the spot-kick to complete the 4-0 scoreline.

Spain dominated possession with 88% and registered 33 shots, compared to Bulgaria’s three. Pedri orchestrated the midfield, completing over 100 passes before being substituted to a standing ovation. Despite minor Bulgarian threats, including a near miss by Kiril Despodov, Spain remained firmly in control.

The victory means Spain has now won 29 consecutive competitive matches, matching their national record. Under coach Luis de la Fuente, Spain has won the 2023 Nations League, the 2024 European Championship, and reached the 2025 Nations League final. They are now just four points away from securing automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

Bulgaria, on the other hand, has been eliminated from contention with no points from four matches. They will now focus on rebuilding for future campaigns.

Spain’s next qualifier is against Turkey in November, where they will aim to continue their perfect run and secure their place in the World Cup.

Taking over leadership at the JAMB headquarters in Bwari, Abuja, Aina succeeds Professor Ishaq Oloyede, whose 10-year, two-term tenure concluded on July 31, 2026. In his inaugural address, Aina acknowledged the foundation laid by his predecessor—who is widely credited with modernizing the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)—and vowed to expand on those achievements. Emphasizing a strong stance against malpractice, he warned wrongdoers that their illicit activities have no place at JAMB, promising to ramp up modern technological investments and deepen partnerships with security agencies to safeguard the integrity of the admissions process.
