Mbah’s Shock Defection Triggers Massive Exodus To APC.

Published

The political landscape is set for another major shake-up as Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah is expected to officially defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) today, alongside lawmakers, local government chairmen, councillors, and top aides.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Nivo News, Mbah’s switch to the ruling party marks the beginning of a fresh round of defections by governors across the country, with Bayelsa State Governor Duoye Diri reportedly next in line. Sources within Diri’s administration confirmed that his defection plans had been concluded and would be made public in the coming days.

Another PDP governor from the Northeast is also said to be finalising arrangements to join the APC, signalling a growing realignment among top political figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Earlier in the year, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno had similarly crossed over to the APC with their cabinets and political allies.

Despite the wave of defections, PDP Governors’ Forum Deputy Chairman and Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, downplayed the development, insisting that the party remained resilient and focused on its upcoming national convention scheduled for Ibadan next month.

Enugu is expected to come alive today as Vice President Kashim Shettima leads a high-powered APC delegation — including National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker of the House of Representatives Abbas Tajudeen — to formally welcome Governor Mbah and present him with the party’s flag.

Top political figures, traditional rulers, and leaders of Ohanaeze Ndigbo have endorsed Mbah’s decision, describing it as strategic for the Southeast. Ohanaeze Vice President Prof. Fred Eze and National Treasurer Dr. Peter Eke said Mbah’s move was both “bold and timely,” adding that it would attract more federal attention and developmental projects to Enugu State.

They emphasised that the defection would not affect the state’s zoning arrangement, reaffirming their commitment to equity and justice in future political decisions.

Chairman of the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, Igwe Samuel Asadu, commended Mbah’s leadership, saying the governor had earned national respect through his people-oriented governance. “Our support for the governor transcends party lines,” he declared.

ALGON Chairman in Enugu, Okechukwu Edeh, also backed the move, stating that the people were united behind Mbah’s political direction. “Governor Mbah is the political compass of Enugu today. This decision reflects the voice of the people,” he noted.

Former Enugu PDP Chairman Augustine Nnamani said the defections were expected, accusing the PDP of sidelining the Southeast by failing to recognise Udeh-Okoye as National Secretary. “The party chose Abuja interests over the Southeast,” he said. “Mbah’s exit aligns with our regional decision to leave if our demand was ignored.”

With Mbah’s defection, the APC now controls three of the five Southeast states, while the Labour Party (LP) and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) hold one each. The once-dominant PDP now has no governorship seat in the region.

Reacting to the mass movement, Governor Makinde maintained that the PDP remained strong and unshaken. Speaking after a meeting of the party’s National Convention Transportation Subcommittee, he said the defections were part of democracy’s natural evolution.

“Challenges will come and go, but the PDP will survive them,” Makinde asserted. “Defections don’t mean the house is collapsing. Democracy thrives on conflict and resolution.”

He reaffirmed the PDP’s national spread, stating: “PDP is present in every ward across Nigeria. We’ve seen tougher times and come out stronger. We’re not going anywhere.”

Makinde dismissed rumours of a 2027 presidential ambition, saying his current focus was rebuilding the party and delivering a successful convention in Ibadan.

Meanwhile, former Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) President Udengs Eradiri urged Governor Diri to use his planned entry into the APC to reconcile factions within the Bayelsa chapter, calling for unity between camps loyal to former Governor Timipre Sylva and Minister of State for Petroleum, Heineken Lokpobiri.

Eradiri stated, “Your coming to the APC should bring peace and inclusiveness. You managed the PDP effectively; now bring that same leadership strength to the APC as its new face in Bayelsa.”

Other issues include uneven health-system performance across wards and regions, persistent disparities in development indicators—particularly in northern states—community perceptions that affect programme participation, and the need for improved allocation and management of public resources.

“Democracy Under Siege: The Threat Within”.

Published

on

Democracy is widely understood as an ongoing process of governance grounded in popular sovereignty, rather than a fixed state or a one-time event. This explains why even the United States—often regarded as a model of democracy after more than 200 years—faces challenges such as intense partisanship, declining trust in institutions, threats to the electoral process, a partisan Supreme Court, and a distrusted media.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Similarly, some of the challenges facing Nigeria’s democratic journey—like what some describe as “state capture” by elites, authoritarian tendencies of executives with military backgrounds, a legislature dominated by inexperienced politicians, and political parties run more like military garrisons than democratic institutions—should not be seen as fatal threats to the country’s democracy.

Zamfara Board Chairman Affirms Education As Crucial Weapon Against Poverty And Unemployment

Contrary to the claims of sore losers such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and collaborators like Pat Utomi, Omoyele Sowore, and Oby Ezekwesili, who attempt to frame Nigeria’s democratic difficulties as beginning with President Bola Tinubu’s administration, the reality is different. These self-proclaimed defenders of democracy echo earlier actors who, rather than accept electoral outcomes, resorted to undemocratic measures—like courting the military to seize power in 1966. For instance, some of Peter Obi’s supporters openly called for a military takeover after he placed third in an election, failing to meet the constitutional threshold.

Over the past three years, these so-called champions of democracy have focused on undermining state institutions: attacking the executive, legislature, and judiciary. Dele Farotimi, a prominent member of Obi’s supporters, traveled to the U.S. seeking foreign intervention against the inauguration of a freely elected president. When that failed, his group lobbied the U.S. Congress to discredit Nigeria’s president. Meanwhile, the legislature, acting within its mandate, became a target of calumny, and attempts were made to compromise the Supreme Court, the institution responsible for ensuring stability and upholding the rule of law.

Despite these challenges, there is no reason to despair over Nigeria’s democracy. From the eve of independence, when institutions were still forming, through decades of military rule and poorly prepared civilian administrations, Nigeria has made significant strides in democratic governance.

Today, calls for foreign intervention or cries of “war” by dissatisfied political actors hold little sway. Nigerians have a deeper understanding of democracy than in 1966. Those who have disrespected democratic norms—abandoning party rules, losing re-election bids, or migrating to unregistered parties—cannot suddenly claim the mantle of democracy defenders.

The strategy of “if we cannot have it, no one else must have it” has long been evident among seasonal political migrants. Peter Obi’s recent formal registration with ADC highlights this pattern, as supporters previously threatened the party to secure an automatic ticket for him, demonstrating a disregard for party rules and democratic norms.

Even debates around the Electoral Act and indirect primaries—intended to regulate internal party processes—have been misconstrued, echoing historical cases where party elites manipulated delegate votes, such as Obasanjo vs. Ekwueme in 1998 or Atiku vs. others in 2019 and 2023.

Comparisons with other democracies must be cautious. For instance, the U.S. Supreme Court has repeatedly shielded a leader accused of serious misconduct, and the Republican-controlled legislature has often supported undemocratic measures. In contrast, Nigeria’s institutions—presidency, legislature, judiciary, and free press—have ensured continuity, periodic elections, and accountability.

In conclusion, despite the attempts by self-styled warriors of democracy to undermine institutions, Nigeria’s democratic process has matured and strengthened over time. The country now boasts a system many nations might wish to emulate: periodic elections, an independent legislature and judiciary, and a free press.
