Mbah’s Shock Defection Triggers Massive Exodus To APC.
The political landscape is set for another major shake-up as Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah is expected to officially defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) today, alongside lawmakers, local government chairmen, councillors, and top aides.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Nivo News, Mbah’s switch to the ruling party marks the beginning of a fresh round of defections by governors across the country, with Bayelsa State Governor Duoye Diri reportedly next in line. Sources within Diri’s administration confirmed that his defection plans had been concluded and would be made public in the coming days.
Another PDP governor from the Northeast is also said to be finalising arrangements to join the APC, signalling a growing realignment among top political figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Earlier in the year, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno had similarly crossed over to the APC with their cabinets and political allies.
Despite the wave of defections, PDP Governors’ Forum Deputy Chairman and Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, downplayed the development, insisting that the party remained resilient and focused on its upcoming national convention scheduled for Ibadan next month.
Enugu is expected to come alive today as Vice President Kashim Shettima leads a high-powered APC delegation — including National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker of the House of Representatives Abbas Tajudeen — to formally welcome Governor Mbah and present him with the party’s flag.
Top political figures, traditional rulers, and leaders of Ohanaeze Ndigbo have endorsed Mbah’s decision, describing it as strategic for the Southeast. Ohanaeze Vice President Prof. Fred Eze and National Treasurer Dr. Peter Eke said Mbah’s move was both “bold and timely,” adding that it would attract more federal attention and developmental projects to Enugu State.
They emphasised that the defection would not affect the state’s zoning arrangement, reaffirming their commitment to equity and justice in future political decisions.
Chairman of the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, Igwe Samuel Asadu, commended Mbah’s leadership, saying the governor had earned national respect through his people-oriented governance. “Our support for the governor transcends party lines,” he declared.
ALGON Chairman in Enugu, Okechukwu Edeh, also backed the move, stating that the people were united behind Mbah’s political direction. “Governor Mbah is the political compass of Enugu today. This decision reflects the voice of the people,” he noted.
Former Enugu PDP Chairman Augustine Nnamani said the defections were expected, accusing the PDP of sidelining the Southeast by failing to recognise Udeh-Okoye as National Secretary. “The party chose Abuja interests over the Southeast,” he said. “Mbah’s exit aligns with our regional decision to leave if our demand was ignored.”
With Mbah’s defection, the APC now controls three of the five Southeast states, while the Labour Party (LP) and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) hold one each. The once-dominant PDP now has no governorship seat in the region.
Reacting to the mass movement, Governor Makinde maintained that the PDP remained strong and unshaken. Speaking after a meeting of the party’s National Convention Transportation Subcommittee, he said the defections were part of democracy’s natural evolution.
“Challenges will come and go, but the PDP will survive them,” Makinde asserted. “Defections don’t mean the house is collapsing. Democracy thrives on conflict and resolution.”
He reaffirmed the PDP’s national spread, stating: “PDP is present in every ward across Nigeria. We’ve seen tougher times and come out stronger. We’re not going anywhere.”
Makinde dismissed rumours of a 2027 presidential ambition, saying his current focus was rebuilding the party and delivering a successful convention in Ibadan.
Meanwhile, former Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) President Udengs Eradiri urged Governor Diri to use his planned entry into the APC to reconcile factions within the Bayelsa chapter, calling for unity between camps loyal to former Governor Timipre Sylva and Minister of State for Petroleum, Heineken Lokpobiri.
Eradiri stated, “Your coming to the APC should bring peace and inclusiveness. You managed the PDP effectively; now bring that same leadership strength to the APC as its new face in Bayelsa.”

The Incident: Approximately an hour after the meeting, Risku and an associate were intercepted and fatally shot in Okudu village.
