Kano Court Jails Man Eight Months for Impersonating Police Officer

KANO, Nigeria — A Shari’a court sitting in the Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State has sentenced a 33-year-old man, Nasiru Shitu, to eight months in prison for impersonating a police officer.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The presiding judge, after reviewing the case, found Shitu guilty of posing as a law enforcement officer to deceive unsuspecting members of the public. The court ruled that his actions violated both moral and legal standards under the Shari’a and penal laws of the state.

According to court records, Shitu was arrested after he was caught wearing a police uniform and presenting himself as a serving officer. Investigations revealed that he had no connection with the Nigeria Police Force and had been using the disguise to extort money from residents.

The prosecution told the court that the accused had been parading himself around the Fagge area for several weeks before he was apprehended following a tip-off from members of the community.

During interrogation, Shitu reportedly confessed to the act and pleaded guilty when the charge was read to him. The court took his plea into consideration but stressed that impersonation of law enforcement officers is a serious offense that undermines public trust and security.

In his ruling, the judge said the sentence would serve as a warning to others who might attempt similar crimes. “Pretending to be a police officer to deceive people is unacceptable and must be punished to protect the integrity of our security institutions,” the judge stated.

The court sentenced Shitu to eight months’ imprisonment without the option of a fine. However, it granted him the opportunity to appeal the judgment if he wished to do so.

Residents in the area commended the court for the swift handling of the case, noting that cases of impersonation had been on the rise recently. They urged authorities to continue strict enforcement to deter future offenders.

The Kano State Police Command also welcomed the judgment, saying the ruling would help discourage the impersonation of officers. A spokesperson for the command emphasized that only properly identified and uniformed officers are authorized to act on behalf of the police.

He warned the public to always verify the identity of anyone claiming to be a police officer before complying with any demands.

Impersonation of a law enforcement officer is a criminal offense under Nigerian law, often attracting imprisonment depending on the severity of the act. The judgment, observers say, reflects ongoing efforts by authorities to maintain public confidence in legitimate security operations.

Shitu will serve his sentence at a correctional facility in Kano.
