DSS Warns Public Against Fake Officer Impersonating Agency to Defraud Citizens

Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a public warning against one Victor Onyedikachi Godwin, a dismissed officer accused of using the agency’s name to deceive and defraud unsuspecting individuals.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement released on Monday, the DSS said Godwin was dismissed from service after being found guilty of misconduct and has since been posing as an active officer to carry out fraudulent activities.

The security agency cautioned members of the public to be vigilant and avoid engaging in any business or transaction with the suspect or anyone claiming to represent the DSS without proper verification.

According to the DSS, Godwin has been approaching individuals under false pretenses, promising to use his supposed influence within the service to secure favors, jobs, or confidential information in exchange for money.

“We wish to inform the public that Victor Onyedikachi Godwin is no longer a staff member of the DSS. Anyone dealing with him or others using the Service’s name for personal gain does so at their own risk,” the statement read.

The agency further stated that it has begun efforts to apprehend Godwin and bring him to justice. It urged victims or anyone with useful information about his whereabouts to report to the nearest DSS office or any other law enforcement agency.

Security analysts say impersonation of security officials remains a recurring issue in Nigeria, often leading to financial losses and public mistrust. They commended the DSS for taking proactive steps to alert the public before more people fall victim.

Meanwhile, the DSS reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining professionalism and integrity within its ranks. The agency said it will continue to take strict action against any current or former officer found engaging in acts that tarnish the service’s image.

“We remain committed to upholding national security and protecting citizens from fraudsters who exploit the Service’s name,” the DSS assured.

Members of the public were also advised to verify the identity of anyone claiming to be a DSS official by contacting official communication channels before making any commitments.

The warning serves as a reminder for Nigerians to remain cautious and report suspicious individuals claiming links to government or security institutions.
