Abuja, Nigeria — Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called on governments, communities, and individuals to prioritize mental health support, especially for vulnerable groups, as the world marks 2025 World Mental Health Day.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a message released Friday, the First Lady emphasized that mental health remains an often-overlooked issue, particularly during emergencies and crises. She stressed that society must address the unseen burdens carried by individuals facing anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

“Mental health must be treated as a guaranteed right for everyone, especially those most at risk,” Tinubu said. She highlighted the importance of creating safe spaces where people can openly discuss their mental health challenges without fear of judgment or stigma.

The theme for this year’s World Mental Health Day, “Access to Services – Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies,” reflects the urgent need for support systems during crises. Tinubu said the theme is a reminder to reach out to others, foster genuine human connection, and advocate for the mental well-being of all affected by disasters, conflicts, or personal trauma.

According to the First Lady, mental health services are often neglected in emergency responses, leaving many vulnerable individuals without the help they need. She called on government agencies, civil society organizations, and local communities to work together to bridge gaps in access to mental health care.

“Mental health challenges do not discriminate,” she said. “We must ensure that everyone, especially the most vulnerable, has access to timely and appropriate support. This is a shared responsibility.”

Experts say the COVID-19 pandemic, natural disasters, and ongoing social conflicts have increased the need for mental health services globally. In Nigeria, limited infrastructure, societal stigma, and insufficient funding often prevent people from seeking help.

Tinubu’s message also stressed the role of family and community in providing support. She encouraged people to check in on friends and relatives, particularly those who may be silently struggling. “A kind word, a listening ear, or a simple act of understanding can make a significant difference,” she said.

International organizations have echoed the First Lady’s call for action. The World Health Organization (WHO) notes that mental health conditions affect one in four people worldwide at some point in their lives, yet many do not receive care due to systemic barriers.

In her address, the First Lady urged policymakers to strengthen mental health policies, fund services adequately, and integrate mental health care into emergency response plans. She also called for public education campaigns to reduce stigma and promote awareness.

“Today, we stand together to acknowledge the importance of mental health,” Tinubu said. “Let us commit to building a society where everyone feels safe to seek help and where mental well-being is valued as much as physical health.”

World Mental Health Day is observed annually on October 10 to raise awareness about mental health issues and mobilize efforts to support those affected. This year’s focus on mental health during emergencies highlights the growing need for accessible services during crises, natural disasters, and humanitarian situations.

As Nigeria joins the global conversation, Tinubu’s message serves as a reminder that mental health is not a luxury—it is a fundamental right, requiring collective effort, empathy, and action.
