Court Delays Kanu’s Terrorism Trial over Missing Medical Report, Lawyers Demand Release
ABUJA, Nigeria — The trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was postponed Wednesday after the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) failed to submit a court-ordered health report. The Federal High Court in Abuja has rescheduled proceedings for October 16.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Kanu appeared frail and weak when he was brought before the court on October 8. His legal team said the delay could not be allowed to go on, citing life-threatening health risks while he remains in custody.
Medical Report Withheld
The judge granted Kanu’s attorneys’ request for a medical evaluation due to concerns over his condition behind bars. But the NMA missed the deadline to deliver the report, prompting the court to pause the case until officials comply.
Lead counsel Ifeanyi Ejiofor argued that Kanu’s health has worsened and urged a transfer to a secure medical institution outside prison custody. He warned that further delay may endanger his client’s life.
No representative from the NMA was present to explain the lapse during the court session, and the judge expressed displeasure over the lack of accountability.
Lawyers Call for Medical Transfer, Release
Kanu’s lawyers pressed for his temporary release until he recovers. They maintained that his continued detention under poor health conditions violated his rights under Nigeria’s constitution and international law.
“We are not seeking impunity, but medical justice,” said one of the counsel. They pledged to submit a follow-up motion, demanding that Kanu be treated in a government-approved hospital and not in the prison clinic.
Political Backlash: Atiku Denounces Detention
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar condemned Kanu’s four-year incarceration as an abuse by state power. In a public statement, Atiku called for an independent investigation into the conduct of security agencies and judicial authorities in Kanu’s case.
“At this stage, continuing to hold him under such questionable conditions is arbitrary and a violation of democratic norms,” Atiku said.
His remarks came amid growing tension over the government’s handling of separatist movements and civil liberties.
Activists Plan March for Release
Separately, civil society activists and pro-Biafra supporters, led by campaigner Omoyele Sowore, announced a peaceful march to Nigeria’s presidential villa, Aso Rock, on October 20. Their aim: to pressure President Bola Tinubu to order Kanu’s release.
Organizers say the march will remain nonviolent and hope to attract thousands from across the southeast. Placards, speeches and sit-ins are planned along the route. Security agencies have yet to confirm whether they will allow the protest.
What Lies Ahead
With the next hearing fixed for October 16, focus now shifts to whether the NMA will comply with the court order and submit Kanu’s medical report. The lawyers’ motions for medical transfer and temporary release are expected to be heard then.
Observers say the case has added urgency to debates over due process, political detainees, and human rights in Nigeria. Kanu’s supporters argue his detention has become a symbol of abuse of power, while the government insists the trial must follow legal protocols.
As the country watches, the balance between justice, health rights, and political pressure will be tested in the days ahead.

“We Will Rig You!”: Peter Obi Issues Explosive Warning To INEC Over Alleged Election Manipulation!.
During a recent visit to Washington, D.C., Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), argued that the prevalence of election rigging in Nigeria is largely due to voters failing to actively defend their ballots. Obi emphasized that while candidates play a role in the process, credible outcomes ultimately depend on citizens remaining at their polling units to ensure votes are counted transparently. He criticized the “transactional” nature of Nigerian politics, suggesting that many voters prioritize other activities over the essential task of monitoring the electoral process. According to Obi, Nigeria’s primary challenge is poor political leadership, and he urged citizens to take collective ownership of their votes to demand the accountable governance required for the country to succeed.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has called for increased citizen involvement in protecting electoral integrity. During a recent trip to Washington, D.C., Obi stated that election manipulation persists because voters frequently leave polling stations before the counting process is completed. He argued that:
-
Voters must proactively defend their ballots at polling units to ensure transparency and prevent rigging.
-
Nigeria’s fundamental obstacle is a crisis of political leadership, rather than a lack of natural or human resources.
-
Real change requires Nigerians to move beyond passive participation and take active responsibility for the electoral process.
