Togolese Midfielder Breaks Neck in China Match, Faces Risk of Paralysis
BEIJING (AP) — Togolese international Samuel Asamoah suffered a serious neck injury after colliding with a pitch-side advertising board during a League One match in China, his club said Thursday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The 31-year-old was playing for Guangxi Pingguo FC against Chongqing Tonglianglong when he was pushed and crashed headfirst into an LED board just beyond the touchline.
Club officials say Asamoah has multiple fractures in his neck and nerve damage. He underwent surgery and is now in stable condition, though the risk of paralysis is high.
“He is at risk of high-level paraplegia and will miss all remaining games this season,” Guangxi Pingguo said in a statement. “His career may also be seriously affected.”
On Wednesday, the club updated fans that Asamoah was recovering after surgery and remained in stable condition.
Asamoah began his career in Europe, playing in Belgium and Romania before moving to China in 2024.He has been capped six times for Togo’s national team.
According to Chinese authorities, the advertising board was set about 3 meters from the field, meeting “international standards.
The opposing player, Chongqing midfielder Zhang Zhixiong, received a yellow card for his role in the challenge.
This incident has drawn concern over field safety and the placement of fixed structures near playing surfaces.
