ABUJA (Oct. 9, 2025) — A Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday sentenced Garuba Mohammed Duku, a former Director of Finance and Administration under the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), to 24 years in prison for diverting ₦318 million in government funds.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Judge James Omotosho found Duku guilty on six counts of money laundering and corruption, brought by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

According to the ICPC, between 2012 and 2013, Duku transferred funds from AMMC into his personal account at Fidelity Bank and later moved them through Bureau de Change operators for unauthorised uses.

The sums were broken into several instalments: ₦56.25 million, ₦71 million, ₦53 million, ₦54 million, ₦46 million, and ₦36.3 million. Duku had claimed the funds were handed to his superiors, but the court said there was no evidence to support that claim.

In the judgment, Judge Omotosho said the prosecution proved its case “beyond a reasonable doubt,” calling the evidence “credible, consistent, and sufficient.”

He sentenced Duku to four years imprisonment on each count, with the sentences to run concurrently. Duku was given an alternative option: pay a fine amounting to five times the sums involved in each count—a total of about ₦1.6 billion—to avoid jail time.

If he does not pay, Duku will begin serving his sentence in Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja.

Speaking after the verdict, ICPC’s Director of Public Enlightenment and Education, Demola Bakare, called the conviction a “major victory” in Nigeria’s fight against corruption. He said it sends a clear message: public officials misusing funds “will not go unpunished.”
