He sentenced Duku to four years imprisonment on each count, with the sentences to run concurrently. Duku was given an alternative option: pay a fine amounting to five times the sums involved in each count—a total of about ₦1.6 billion—to avoid jail time.

If he does not pay, Duku will begin serving his sentence in Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja.

Speaking after the verdict, ICPC’s Director of Public Enlightenment and Education, Demola Bakare, called the conviction a “major victory” in Nigeria’s fight against corruption. He said it sends a clear message: public officials misusing funds “will not go unpunished.”
