Court Adjourns Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial to October 16 Over Medical Report Delay

Published

ABUJA — The Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday adjourned the terrorism trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to October 16, 2025, following the Nigerian Medical Association’s (NMA) delay in submitting a report on his medical fitness.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Justice Binta Nyako postponed the hearing after the court learned that the NMA had yet to present the assessment report requested to determine whether Kanu is fit to continue with his trial.

Kanu, who appeared in court looking frail, was seen wearing a white outfit and leaning on the dock throughout the brief session. His defense team, led by lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor, told the court that his client’s health condition had worsened while in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Ejiofor said Kanu has been struggling with heart-related complications and that the DSS has not provided adequate medical attention. “We are deeply concerned about his deteriorating condition,” Ejiofor told reporters outside the courtroom. “The delay in the NMA report puts his life at greater risk.”

Prosecutors, however, urged the court to proceed with the trial, arguing that Kanu had already been examined by government-approved doctors. They maintained that the case had faced multiple delays due to defense applications.

The court emphasized that the NMA report was essential before any further proceedings could continue. Justice Nyako ordered the association to submit the medical evaluation before the next hearing date.

The development has sparked fresh political and public reactions. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar criticized the government’s continued detention of Kanu, describing it as “an abuse of power and a disregard for human rights.”

Atiku, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), said, “Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done. The prolonged detention of Nnamdi Kanu without fair hearing undermines the principles of democracy.”

Human rights activist and presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore also weighed in, calling for Kanu’s immediate release. He announced plans for a peaceful march to Aso Rock on October 20 to demand the IPOB leader’s freedom. “This is not about politics but about justice and human dignity,” Sowore said.

Kanu has been in DSS custody since his re-arrest in June 2021, facing multiple charges including treasonable felony, terrorism, and inciting violence. He denies all allegations, insisting his campaign for Biafran independence is peaceful.

The court’s adjournment adds another chapter to the long-running case that has drawn national and international attention.

Supporters of Kanu gathered outside the courthouse, chanting solidarity songs and demanding his release. Security remained tight, with armed personnel stationed at strategic points around the area.

The next hearing on October 16 is expected to determine whether the trial will proceed, depending on the NMA’s submission of its long-awaited medical report.

Momodu Defends Atiku Amid Age Criticism Ahead Of 2027 Presidential Contest.

Published

ADC chieftain and publisher, Dele Momodu, has dismissed calls for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race, describing the push as unfair and politically motivated.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Momodu was reacting to comments by activist Zekeri Idris Jnr, a supporter of Peter Obi, who urged Atiku to step aside over concerns about his age, which would be about 80 by 2027.

In a post on his X handle on Saturday, Momodu said attention should be focused on holding the government accountable rather than targeting Atiku’s political ambition.

The exchange followed a viral video where Idris insisted that Atiku should support younger aspirants instead of contesting, arguing that voters would not back an elderly candidate.

Idris also suggested that Atiku should act as a statesman and support younger politicians such as Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and others.

Responding, Momodu cited several world leaders who held office at advanced ages, arguing that experience should not be dismissed in leadership discussions.

He questioned what should disqualify Atiku from contesting, insisting that age alone is not a valid reason.

Atiku, who lost the 2023 presidential election to President Bola Tinubu, is reportedly considering another run in 2027 under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
