Across the country, politicians, analysts, and ordinary citizens are urging the former leader to consider another run for the presidency. Despite not declaring any intention to contest, Jonathan’s recent activities and meetings with key political figures have fueled speculation about a comeback.
Pressure for his return is coming from within and outside the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Former Minister of Information Jerry Gana recently told delegates at the PDP congress in Niger State that Nigerians want Jonathan back, saying, “We have seen the difference, and they are asking us to bring back our friend, former President Goodluck Jonathan. I can confirm that he will contest in 2027 as PDP’s candidate.”
If confirmed, Jonathan’s potential candidacy would contradict remarks made earlier this year by his wife, former First Lady Patience Jonathan. During a meeting with First Lady Remi Tinubu, she said her husband was “done with the presidency” and would not run against President Bola Tinubu in 2027. Her comments were seen as an attempt to calm speculations about her husband’s political ambitions.
Despite that, groups such as the Nigeria Rescue Mission Organisation continue to push for Jonathan’s return. Its president, Dr. Jibril Mustapha, recently said, “Now is the time for a leader who can unite the country. We urge former President Jonathan to step forward and lead Nigeria toward a brighter future.”
The growing calls for Jonathan’s return are reportedly causing unease within President Tinubu’s camp. Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga dismissed the reports as “delusional,” saying Tinubu would easily defeat Jonathan if he contested. He also hinted that the government might challenge Jonathan’s eligibility in court, given that he has already been sworn in twice as president.
Still, sources within Aso Rock say Tinubu’s inner circle is taking the possibility seriously. “We are worried about the danger Jonathan’s return could pose,” one insider said. “He could sweep votes in the South-South and South-East, while the North becomes a battleground.”
Jonathan is said to be holding quiet consultations with key figures in opposition parties, including a recent meeting with African Democratic Congress (ADC) leaders and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi. Political observers believe these talks could lead to a coalition or alliance designed to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Analysts predict that if Jonathan decides to contest, he could attract wide bipartisan support. Several governors and lawmakers across party lines are reportedly backing his potential bid, viewing him as a unifying figure. Northern political leaders are also believed to support his return, seeing it as a strategic move to ensure power shifts back to the North by 2031.
A former lawmaker familiar with the discussions said Jonathan’s candidacy could reshape alliances. “If he runs, he will be a candidate of parties, not just one party,” he said. “Many governors and legislators across party lines are ready to support him.”
Observers suggest that recent political developments in Africa — such as the re-election of Ghana’s former president John Mahama and the victory of former Malawian president Peter Mutharika — have boosted Jonathan’s confidence.
Inside the PDP and ADC, talks are ongoing about a possible merger or hybrid alliance to back Jonathan as a joint candidate at the PDP convention in November. If successful, the move could mark one of the most significant political realignments in Nigeria’s democratic history.
For now, Jonathan remains silent. But with 2027 drawing closer, all eyes are on whether the former president will heed the calls to return — and how his decision could reshape Nigeria’s political future.
Military and security officials in Benin Republic have apprehended approximately a dozen soldiers, including the key ringleaders, following a failed coup attempt. The arrests came after a group of officers, calling themselves the Military Committee for Refoundation, appeared on national television on Sunday morning, claiming to have removed President Patrice Talon and dissolved all state institutions. The officers asserted that they had seized control of the government.
The presidency, however, confirmed that President Talon is safe and that loyalist forces are restoring order. Authorities described the coup attempt as the work of “a small group” with limited reach, adding that the city and the country remain secure.
Regional bloc ECOWAS has condemned the attempted takeover, describing it as a serious and unacceptable challenge to the democratic will of the people. In a statement issued in Abuja, the Commission called for strict adherence to the country’s Constitution and praised the efforts of the government and the Republican Army in regaining control. ECOWAS warned that the plot’s leaders would be held accountable for any loss of life or property arising from their actions and reaffirmed its full support for Benin, including potential deployment of the regional standby force if necessary.

While specific details of their discussions were not disclosed, the meeting is widely interpreted as part of preparatory consultations ahead of the 2027 elections. Atiku described the encounter as a pleasure, stating, “It was a pleasure catching up with former President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday evening, following his recent return from Guinea-Bissau.”
Separately, Atiku’s Senior Political Assistant, Olarenwaju, attributed the former Vice President’s actions against Jonathan in 2015 to a breach of a gentleman’s agreement. Speaking during an Space discussion titled “APC Must Go,” Olarenwaju explained that his alignment with Atiku was motivated by a broader vision for Nigeria’s progress. He said, “Most of the answers I’m going to give tonight are not just based on my deliberations with Atiku, they are based on my desire for a better Nigeria. At the end of the day, if Nigeria is better, my life is better and easier as a Nigerian. So I only find myself with Atiku; in 2015, I didn’t find myself with Atiku, I found myself on the side of Goodluck Jonathan.”
According to reports, Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu, was conferred with the prestigious chieftaincy title of Yeye Asiwaju Gbogbo Ile Oodu’a during a ceremony in Ile-Ife, Osun State, on Sunday. Senator Tinubu arrived at the palace around 1 PM, greeted with fanfare and stringent security measures. She was received by Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi and his council of chiefs.
