Oyo Local Leaders Urge Governor Makinde to Run for President
Leaders of local governments in Oyo State have called on Governor Seyi Makinde to consider running for the presidency in the 2027 elections. The leaders, representing various political and community groups, said Makinde’s achievements in Oyo State make him a strong candidate for the nation’s highest office.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking during a meeting in Ibadan on Tuesday, the local government chairpersons praised Makinde’s efforts in improving education, health, and infrastructure in the state. They argued that his leadership style, which emphasizes transparency and development, could benefit Nigeria at the national level.
“Governor Makinde has shown great leadership in Oyo State. We believe he has the capacity, vision, and integrity to lead Nigeria,” said one of the local government chairpersons, who requested anonymity. “We urge him to consider stepping forward for the presidency in 2027.”
The leaders highlighted several initiatives they say set Makinde apart from other politicians. These include increased funding for schools, construction of roads and bridges, provision of free healthcare services in some areas, and efforts to attract investment into the state.
Makinde, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was elected governor in 2019 and re-elected in 2023. His supporters say his administration has focused on policies that improve the quality of life for ordinary citizens, particularly in rural areas.
The call for Makinde to run for president comes amid growing speculation about the PDP’s potential candidates for the 2027 election. Political analysts say Makinde’s popularity in Oyo and his track record in governance could make him a strong contender.
“Makinde is seen as a modern, progressive leader,” said Dr. Adebayo Adeola, a political analyst at the University of Ibadan. “His policies have tangible results, and that resonates with voters. If he decides to run, he could shake up the political landscape.”
Some residents of Oyo State expressed support for the idea, saying they believe Makinde has the experience and vision to lead Nigeria.
“I have lived in Oyo for over 20 years, and I have seen real changes under Governor Makinde,” said Mrs. Funke Oladipo, a teacher in Ibadan. “I think he can bring the same development to the whole country.”
However, political observers caution that national elections are different from state elections. While Makinde is popular in Oyo, building a nationwide support base will be crucial if he decides to run for president.
“Winning a state election is one thing, but the presidency requires support across all regions of Nigeria,” said Mr. Samuel Balogun, a political commentator. “Makinde would need to work hard to build alliances and present a clear national agenda.”
For now, Makinde has not publicly commented on the calls for him to contest the presidency. The local government leaders, however, said they will continue to rally support and encourage the governor to consider the nation’s call.
The PDP is yet to announce any official candidates for the 2027 elections, but speculation is likely to increase as the political landscape heats up in the coming months.
With his record in Oyo State and growing popularity among party leaders and citizens alike, Seyi Makinde’s potential entry into the presidential race could be a game-changer for Nigerian politics.
