Nigeria Senate Decries Global Disrespect for Green Passport

Published

on

ABUJA — The Nigerian Senate has expressed concern over the growing lack of respect for the country’s international passport, once regarded as a symbol of national pride and global identity.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

During Tuesday’s plenary session, lawmakers in the upper chamber lamented that the green passport has lost its value in the eyes of many foreign authorities, leading to the humiliation of Nigerians at international airports and embassies.

Senator Biodun Olujimi (Ekiti South), who raised the issue on the floor, described the development as “deeply embarrassing” and called on the federal government to act swiftly to restore the integrity of Nigeria’s passport abroad.

“The green passport used to represent strength and unity. Today, it attracts suspicion instead of respect,” she said. “Our people are being treated poorly at airports simply because of where they come from. It is time the government works to rebuild the country’s image.”

Several lawmakers supported the motion, noting that negative global perception, corruption, and frequent cases of document forgery have damaged Nigeria’s reputation. They urged the Nigeria Immigration Service and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to collaborate in addressing the problem.

Senator Ali Ndume (Borno South) said that the disrespect faced by Nigerians abroad was a reflection of the nation’s internal challenges. “Until we fix our systems, others will continue to look down on us,” he said. “The solution starts with good governance, respect for our laws, and proper documentation.”

The Senate further emphasized the need to strengthen passport issuance procedures, citing reports of delays, multiple intermediaries, and irregularities at passport offices nationwide. Lawmakers argued that improving transparency would help build confidence both locally and internationally.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio described the motion as “timely and necessary,” noting that the Nigerian identity must not be allowed to lose its global standing. He urged the relevant ministries to ensure that Nigerians traveling abroad are treated with dignity.

“The Nigerian passport should open doors, not close them,” Akpabio said. “It is the duty of the government to protect its citizens’ rights everywhere in the world.”

The Senate resolved to summon officials from the Ministry of Interior and the Immigration Service to brief the chamber on efforts to reform the passport system and enhance Nigeria’s global image.

In recent years, several reports have surfaced of Nigerians being subjected to extra screening or denied entry at international borders, especially in Europe and Asia. Analysts say the trend is partly fueled by security concerns and global visa restrictions affecting many African nations.

Observers believe that rebuilding the credibility of the Nigerian passport will require more than diplomatic engagement. They urge the government to improve service delivery, strengthen institutions, and project a positive image through consistent foreign policy actions.

For many Nigerians, the green passport remains more than a travel document — it represents hope, identity, and belonging. Restoring its respect, lawmakers say, is vital to protecting national pride and ensuring equal treatment for citizens across the world.
