Pope Leo’s First Foreign Trip Set for Turkey, Lebanon
VATICAN CITY — Pope Leo XIV will make his first overseas journey as pope at the end of November, traveling to Turkey and Lebanon to promote peace and unity in the Middle East, the Vatican announced Tuesday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The six-day trip will begin in Turkey from Nov. 27 to Nov. 30, then continue in Lebanon from Nov. 30 to Dec. 2.
In Turkey, Pope Leo will visit the city of İznik (ancient Nicaea) to mark the 1,700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea, a landmark event in Christian history. He is also expected to meet with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, spiritual leader of the Eastern Orthodox Church, symbolizing efforts toward Christian solidarity.
His visit to Lebanon will include remembrance of the 2020 Beirut port explosion, which caused widespread destruction and loss of life. The specific cities and schedule in Lebanon will be announced later.
Pope Leo, the first U.S.-born pope, was elected on May 8, following the death of Pope Francis. Francis had planned visits to Turkey and Lebanon late in his papacy but was unable to make them.
Observers say this first trip will set the tone for Leo’s papacy. In public statements, Leo has voiced concern for Christians in the Middle East, called for peace in conflict zones like Gaza, and emphasized interfaith dialogue.
During a meeting with Turkish First Lady Emine Erdogan earlier this year, Pope Leo expressed his intention to visit Turkey in November. That meeting and subsequent talks with Turkish authorities laid the groundwork for the confirmed trip.
Turkey holds a special place for Christian history. İznik was the site where bishops from across the Roman Empire met in 325 A.D. and affirmed the doctrine of the Trinity, shaping Christian belief for centuries.
In Lebanon, a country with a large Christian population, the pope’s visit arrives amid ongoing political, economic, and security challenges. Commemorating the Beirut explosion is likely to draw attention to reconstruction and social healing.
While details are still unfolding, Vatican officials say Pope Leo accepted invitations from both Turkey’s head of state and Lebanon’s ecclesiastical authorities.
The trip is closely watched by Christian communities worldwide, especially in places where interreligious tensions exist. Many see it as a sign of Leo’s priorities: bridge-building, solidarity, and a focus on suffering Christians in difficult contexts.

Atiku Opens Up On ADC 2027 Game Plan, Says Consensus Candidate Comes First.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will first pursue a consensus arrangement before considering a primary election for its 2027 presidential ticket.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Atiku made this known during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday while discussing the party’s leadership and strategy ahead of the next general election.
He said he is open to backing a consensus candidate if that becomes the party’s collective decision, stressing that such support should not be interpreted as stepping aside.
“It is not about stepping aside, but whether I am willing to support, and yes, I will,” Atiku said.
According to him, the ADC’s first priority is to build internal unity and reach an agreement among stakeholders before considering a competitive primary process.
“Our first option will be to work out a consensus. If that doesn’t happen, then of course we will explore other options. And yes, I will support whoever eventually emerges,” he stated.
Atiku also expressed confidence in the political experience within the party, saying he believes a consensus is achievable and may make a full-scale primary contest unnecessary.
“That remains our preferred path. We will go for primaries if consensus fails, but I honestly do not expect it to get to that stage because we are dealing with mature and experienced politicians,” he added.
His comments come amid growing political consultations and coalition talks as parties begin to position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
