Yobe State Cracks Down on Cyberbullying in Schools
DAMATURU, Nigeria — The Yobe State government has announced new measures to curb cyberbullying among students, warning that online harassment is becoming a growing threat to education and child safety.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The initiative, led by the Ministry of Education in partnership with security agencies and digital experts, will introduce awareness campaigns, digital literacy programs, and stricter monitoring of online activities linked to schools.
Officials said the goal is to protect children from harmful online behavior while encouraging safe and responsible use of technology.
Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Mohammed Sani Idris, said the government is worried about the rise of cyberbullying in schools across the state. “We are determined to protect our students not only in classrooms but also in the digital space,” he said during a press briefing in Damaturu.
Under the plan, schools will hold regular workshops to teach students about the risks of online abuse and how to report cases. Teachers and parents will also receive training to identify warning signs and guide children on safe internet use.
Authorities stressed that cyberbullying is linked to depression, poor academic performance, and in extreme cases, school dropouts. They said the program will focus on prevention and early response.
“We want to stop cases before they cause long-term damage,” Idris added. “No child should suffer silently because of what happens on a phone or computer.”
The state also plans to work with telecom providers and social media companies to track harmful content and respond quickly to reports of harassment.
Cybersecurity experts welcomed the move, noting that many young people now spend more time online and are vulnerable to abuse. “Digital platforms are powerful tools for learning, but without control, they can also harm children,” said Musa Abdullahi, a Damaturu-based ICT consultant. “What Yobe is doing can serve as a model for other states.”
The initiative comes at a time when Nigeria faces rising concerns over cybercrime and digital abuse. National reports show that online bullying has affected thousands of young Nigerians, leading to calls for stronger school policies and government regulation.
Parents in Yobe expressed support for the program, saying it could reduce fear and improve student well-being. “Many children are afraid to speak out when they are bullied online,” said Aisha Adamu, a mother of two secondary school students. “This step gives us hope that our children will be safe.”
The Ministry of Education said it will set up help desks in schools where students can confidentially report incidents. Cases will be investigated, and serious offenses may be referred to law enforcement.
Teachers unions in the state also pledged cooperation. They said educators need resources to manage both traditional bullying and its digital version. “This is a new challenge for teachers, and we must be equipped to handle it,” said Umar Ibrahim, chairman of a local teachers’ association.
While officials acknowledged that cyberbullying cannot be completely eliminated, they stressed that awareness and early intervention will greatly reduce its impact.
“Technology is here to stay. We must make sure our children use it in a way that builds their future instead of destroying it,” Idris said.
The Yobe government said the campaign will begin with pilot schools in Damaturu before expanding to all 17 local government areas of the state. Monitoring teams will review progress and suggest improvements along the way.
With digital use among young Nigerians increasing every year, experts say Yobe’s move highlights the urgency of protecting children in both classrooms and online spaces.
If successful, the program could inspire similar policies in other parts of the country.

Cash Deposits: Agulu testified that he deposited billions of naira in cash on behalf of the former CBN chief, with the funds delivered to him by Emefiele’s former personal assistant, Eric Ocheme.

Account Handling: According to the witness, the money was either deposited into accounts for Kelvito Integrated Services and Ifeabigo Integrated Services or placed in the bank’s vault, following instructions allegedly relayed through Ocheme.

Banking Procedures: Despite the large sums, Agulu maintained that he followed standard banking procedures, noting that some clients were granted verbal waivers by senior officials to deposit large amounts of cash.

Refusal to Name Officials: When asked to identify the senior bank officials who provided these verbal waivers, Agulu declined to provide names to avoid getting anyone in trouble.

Additional Transactions: Agulu also testified that he supervised a transfer of ₦1.6 billion to MG Properties Limited.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is prosecuting Emefiele on eight counts, including criminal breach of trust, conspiracy, forgery, and unlawful possession of properties allegedly linked to proceeds of crime; Emefiele has entered a plea of not guilty. Eric Ocheme, who was named in the charges, is reported to be at large. Justice Yusuf Halilu has adjourned the trial for continuation on November 3, 4, and 5, 2026.
