Police Arrest Officer, UNIPORT Student Over Cult-Related Violence
Port Harcourt, Nigeria – Oct. 3, 2025 – Police have arrested a serving officer and a student of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) over their alleged involvement in cult-related violence in Rivers State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The arrests were made following a coordinated investigation by the Rivers State Police Command into recent violent incidents linked to campus cult activities. The officer and student were taken into custody on Wednesday evening.
According to a statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nnamdi Omoni, the suspects are being held for questioning and further investigation. “We are committed to ensuring that anyone involved in cultism and violent crimes faces justice,” Omoni said.
The arrested officer reportedly holds a position in a local police unit, while the UNIPORT student is said to be affiliated with one of the university’s secret cult groups. Police confirmed that evidence linking the suspects to the violence was recovered during their operations.
Cult-related violence has been a persistent problem in some Nigerian universities, often involving rival groups that engage in clashes over influence and control. Authorities have repeatedly warned that participation in such groups is illegal and carries severe penalties.
In recent months, UNIPORT has witnessed several clashes between cult groups, leading to injuries and damage to property. Campus security, together with local police, has been on high alert to prevent further outbreaks.
SP Omoni added that police are also working with university authorities to identify other individuals involved in cult activities. “Our goal is to ensure the safety of students and the general public. We will not tolerate any acts of violence linked to cultism,” he said.
The university administration has expressed support for the police actions. In a statement, UNIPORT’s spokesperson emphasized the institution’s commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment. “We are cooperating fully with law enforcement and urge students to avoid joining secret cult groups that threaten their lives and education,” the statement read.
Experts say addressing cultism in universities requires both law enforcement and awareness campaigns to educate students about the dangers. The Nigerian government has previously launched programs targeting youth involvement in cult activities, including counseling and rehabilitation for those affected.
The impact of the recent arrests is expected to send a strong message to others engaged in cult-related crimes. Authorities have urged community members to report suspicious activities to prevent further violence.
Police investigations are ongoing, and more arrests are possible as authorities continue to probe the network behind the violent incidents. Students and residents have been asked to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement.
Cult-related violence remains a major concern in Nigeria’s higher institutions, posing threats to student safety, academic progress, and community security. Officials hope that swift actions like these arrests will help curb the menace and restore order on campuses.
