Nigeria at 65: Opposition Leaders Criticize Tinubu’s Leadership
Nigeria marks its 65th independence anniversary, opposition leaders and civil society groups are criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s government, accusing it of failing to address economic hardship and insecurity.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The anniversary, observed on October 1, comes at a time of rising inflation, a falling currency, and ongoing security threats across the country. Critics say Tinubu’s policies have worsened the struggles of ordinary Nigerians since he took office in May 2023.
Opposition figures used the anniversary to call attention to what they described as government failures. Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, said Tinubu had not shown leadership that meets the urgency of Nigeria’s problems.
“Sixty-five years after independence, our people deserve better than hunger and uncertainty,” Atiku said in a statement. “This government must take responsibility for the pain caused by its policies.”
Former Anambra State governor Peter Obi, another opposition leader, also spoke out. He said Nigeria’s vast resources should guarantee a higher standard of living, but poor governance has left millions in poverty. “The future of our youth is at stake,” Obi said.
Civil society groups joined the criticism. The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) said the government’s reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and unification of exchange rates, had hurt vulnerable Nigerians without providing safety nets.
“The government must prioritize policies that reduce inequality and restore trust,” said Idayat Hassan, a senior fellow at CDD.
President Tinubu, in his independence speech, defended his record. He said the economic reforms were necessary to stabilize Nigeria and attract investment. “We are laying a foundation for growth that will benefit future generations,” Tinubu said. He urged Nigerians to remain patient and hopeful, promising that relief measures are underway.
Despite the president’s assurances, public frustration is high. The naira has lost significant value against the U.S. dollar, making imports more expensive. Inflation has pushed up food and fuel prices, while unemployment remains widespread.
Security also continues to weigh heavily on citizens. Armed groups operate in the north, banditry affects rural communities, and separatist tensions persist in the southeast. Many Nigerians say daily life is marked by fear and uncertainty.
Analysts note that the 65th anniversary highlights both Nigeria’s progress and its challenges. The country, Africa’s most populous, has seen growth in sectors like entertainment, technology, and banking. But corruption, poor infrastructure, and political instability remain barriers to development.
Political commentators say anniversaries often spark debate about leadership and national direction. “Independence Day is not just about celebration. It is a time to reflect on whether we are living up to our potential,” said Abuja-based analyst Jide Ojo.
Public opinion appears divided. Some Nigerians express cautious optimism, saying reforms may yield benefits in the long run. Others argue that hardship has gone on too long and that government promises sound empty.
For many citizens, the day was less about politics and more about survival. In markets across Lagos and Kano, traders said sales were slow as customers struggled to afford goods. “We cannot celebrate when food is too expensive,” said Maryam Ibrahim, a food seller in Kano.
Nigeria gained independence from Britain in 1960. Since then, it has faced cycles of military rule, democratic transitions, and economic swings. At 65, the nation remains a key power in Africa, but its future depends on how leaders respond to pressing challenges.
As the anniversary ends, opposition leaders vow to keep pressing the government for accountability. Citizens, meanwhile, look to the months ahead with a mix of hope and worry.

Benin Republic Foils Coup: Military Arrests 13 Soldiers Behind Failed Takeover.
Military and security officials in Benin Republic have apprehended approximately a dozen soldiers, including the key ringleaders, following a failed coup attempt. The arrests came after a group of officers, calling themselves the Military Committee for Refoundation, appeared on national television on Sunday morning, claiming to have removed President Patrice Talon and dissolved all state institutions. The officers asserted that they had seized control of the government.
The presidency, however, confirmed that President Talon is safe and that loyalist forces are restoring order. Authorities described the coup attempt as the work of “a small group” with limited reach, adding that the city and the country remain secure.
Regional bloc ECOWAS has condemned the attempted takeover, describing it as a serious and unacceptable challenge to the democratic will of the people. In a statement issued in Abuja, the Commission called for strict adherence to the country’s Constitution and praised the efforts of the government and the Republican Army in regaining control. ECOWAS warned that the plot’s leaders would be held accountable for any loss of life or property arising from their actions and reaffirmed its full support for Benin, including potential deployment of the regional standby force if necessary.

While specific details of their discussions were not disclosed, the meeting is widely interpreted as part of preparatory consultations ahead of the 2027 elections. Atiku described the encounter as a pleasure, stating, “It was a pleasure catching up with former President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday evening, following his recent return from Guinea-Bissau.”
Separately, Atiku’s Senior Political Assistant, Olarenwaju, attributed the former Vice President’s actions against Jonathan in 2015 to a breach of a gentleman’s agreement. Speaking during an Space discussion titled “APC Must Go,” Olarenwaju explained that his alignment with Atiku was motivated by a broader vision for Nigeria’s progress. He said, “Most of the answers I’m going to give tonight are not just based on my deliberations with Atiku, they are based on my desire for a better Nigeria. At the end of the day, if Nigeria is better, my life is better and easier as a Nigerian. So I only find myself with Atiku; in 2015, I didn’t find myself with Atiku, I found myself on the side of Goodluck Jonathan.”
