New Curriculum Launch Leaves Nigerian Schools Struggling
Two weeks after the new academic term began, schools across Nigeria are struggling to implement a recently introduced curriculum, raising concerns among teachers, parents, and education experts about readiness and long-term impact.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The new curriculum, rolled out by the Federal Ministry of Education, is designed to modernize learning and prepare students for global competitiveness. It emphasizes digital literacy, critical thinking, and vocational skills. But many schools say they lack the resources, training, and materials to meet the new demands.
Teachers in both public and private schools have reported confusion over teaching methods and lesson structures. Some say they received guidelines too late, while others claim they were not trained at all.
“We were told about the changes only a few weeks before resumption,” said Grace Oladipo, a secondary school teacher in Lagos. “There was no detailed training. Now we are doing trial and error in front of our students, and it is frustrating.”
Parents have also expressed concern. Many say their children come home with assignments that teachers struggle to explain. Some worry that the curriculum could widen the gap between wealthy schools with better facilities and public schools with overcrowded classrooms.
In Abuja, some private schools have tried to bring in consultants and extra staff to bridge the gap. But in rural areas, where electricity and internet are unreliable, teachers say the digital focus of the new curriculum is unrealistic.
“The government wants us to teach coding when we don’t even have computers in the classroom,” said Musa Ibrahim, a teacher in Kano. “We are not against the new ideas, but the reality is different from the policy.”
Education officials argue that reforms are necessary to prepare Nigerian students for the future. The new plan aims to reduce rote memorization and focus on practical skills such as problem-solving, collaboration, and entrepreneurship.
Dr. Ifeoma Okoye, a curriculum expert at the University of Ibadan, said the changes are long overdue. “Our students need to be ready for a digital economy. This curriculum is a step in the right direction. The challenge is how to fund it and train teachers properly.”
Some state governments have promised to organize workshops and provide teaching aids in the coming months. The Federal Ministry of Education said it is monitoring the rollout and will make adjustments where necessary.
But critics argue that implementation should have been phased in, with pilot programs before full adoption nationwide. They warn that rushing reforms without preparation could harm learning outcomes instead of improving them.
Parents’ associations are calling for urgent action. “We support modern education, but children should not be used as guinea pigs,” said Adeola Akinyemi, a parent in Ibadan. “Teachers need clear guidance and schools need facilities. Without that, this policy will fail.”
For many schools, the immediate challenge is balancing the old system with the new one. Some teachers are still relying on traditional textbooks, while others are improvising with online materials. This mix has left students confused about expectations.
Experts say the next few months will be critical. If training and resources are delivered quickly, schools may adapt and benefit from the changes. If not, the reform could deepen inequalities and undermine confidence in the education system.
For now, classrooms across Nigeria remain testing grounds for a curriculum that promises progress but faces resistance and practical hurdles. Whether the government can bridge the gap between policy and practice will determine if the reform succeeds or falters.
