Adekunle Gold Embraces Nigerian Roots With New Album ‘Fuji’
Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold has released a new album titled Fuji, a project that celebrates his cultural roots and reintroduces the traditional Fuji sound to a global audience.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The album, released Friday, marks a turning point in the Afropop star’s career. Known for blending Afrobeat, pop, and highlife, Adekunle Gold now dives into Fuji music, a genre born in southwestern Nigeria that combines drums, Yoruba chants, and street-inspired rhythms.
Gold said the project is more than an album; it is a tribute to his heritage. “Fuji is the sound of my childhood. It is the music I grew up listening to on the streets of Lagos. With this album, I want to bring Fuji to the world in a new way,” he said in a statement.
The 15-track album features collaborations with both Nigerian and international artists, including top Fuji performers who helped shape the genre. Listeners can expect a mix of traditional percussion, live instrumentation, and modern production that aims to keep the music fresh while preserving its roots.
Fuji music was pioneered in the 1960s by artists like Sikiru Ayinde Barrister and later popularized by musicians such as Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, known as K1 De Ultimate. The genre, once linked closely with working-class neighborhoods in Lagos, has long been celebrated as a raw and powerful form of Nigerian music.
By releasing Fuji, Adekunle Gold joins a new wave of Nigerian artists reconnecting with traditional sounds. Afrobeat and Afropop have dominated global charts in recent years, but Fuji has remained largely local. Gold said his goal is to change that.
“I believe Fuji has the same global potential as Afrobeats,” he said. “People already dance to our rhythms without knowing it. This album is my way of exporting Fuji, of making the world pay attention.”
The album’s lead single, released last month, quickly became popular on Nigerian radio and streaming platforms. Fans praised Gold for his bold move to experiment with Fuji while still maintaining the catchy melodies that have defined his career.
Music critics say the album could be an important step in preserving traditional Nigerian sounds for younger generations. “Fuji has always been part of the cultural heartbeat of Nigeria, but it has struggled to find a place in the global music market,” said Lagos-based music analyst Funke Ajayi. “Adekunle Gold’s star power may help introduce the genre to new listeners across Africa, Europe, and America.”
Gold, 38, first rose to fame with his 2015 hit Sade, a highlife-inspired love song. Over the years, he has built a reputation as one of Nigeria’s most versatile performers, known for reinventing his style with every project. His previous albums mixed Afropop, R&B, and dancehall influences, earning him both local and international recognition.
The singer said Fuji is also a personal journey. “I have made different types of music, but I always knew I would come back home to Fuji. It feels like a full circle moment for me,” he said.
The album arrives at a time when Nigerian music is gaining unprecedented global attention. Artists like Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido have topped international charts and performed on some of the world’s biggest stages. Adekunle Gold hopes Fuji will widen the space for traditional genres in that global spotlight.
As fans stream the new release, the artist has also announced plans for a world tour later this year, with stops in Africa, Europe, and North America. He said the concerts will showcase a live Fuji experience, complete with drummers, dancers, and stage designs inspired by Lagos street culture.
Industry experts say the album could inspire other Nigerian stars to revisit traditional sounds. “What Adekunle Gold is doing with Fuji is important,” Ajayi said. “It’s not just about music. It’s about cultural preservation and showing the world that Nigeria’s sound is deep and diverse.”
For Adekunle Gold, the message is clear. “Fuji is ours. It’s Nigeria’s gift to the world. I just want people to hear it, love it, and dance to it,” he said.
With Fuji, Adekunle Gold may have created not only his most personal album yet but also a new path for Nigerian music on the global stage.
