Accord Party Pushes for Change, Eyes Anambra Race as Nigeria Turns 65
ABUJA, Nigeria — As Nigeria marked its 65th Independence Day, the Accord Party called on citizens to unite for national progress while turning attention to the upcoming 2025 Anambra governorship election.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The party, one of Nigeria’s smaller but active political groups, said the anniversary was not only a moment of celebration but also a chance for Nigerians to reflect on challenges such as insecurity, economic hardship, and weak governance. Accord leaders urged citizens to remain hopeful and participate in the democratic process.
Accord National Chairman, Hon. Isaac Fayose, said the party is preparing to contest strongly in the Anambra poll scheduled for November 2025. He noted that Anambra, a key state in the southeast, will be an important test of the party’s strength ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“We are not only celebrating Nigeria at 65 but also reaffirming our belief in democracy,” Fayose said in Abuja during a media briefing. “Accord is ready to present credible candidates who can deliver real change in Anambra and across the country.”
Push for unity and reforms
The party emphasized that Nigeria’s unity remains its most valuable asset despite rising political tensions and economic struggles. Accord leaders said the country must move beyond ethnic and religious divisions to achieve development.
Party Secretary-General Adebayo Lawal said Nigeria cannot afford to waste more years on what he described as “failed leadership” and urged young people to take charge through the ballot.
“Our independence anniversary reminds us that we still have work to do,” Lawal said. “Accord is offering a new direction that prioritizes security, jobs, and fairness.”
Eye on Anambra election
The Anambra governorship race is expected to be highly competitive, with major parties including the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Labour Party, and now Accord seeking to win.
Accord said it will unveil its candidate in the coming weeks and promised a transparent primary process. Party officials said consultations are ongoing with community leaders, youths, and professionals to ensure the choice reflects the people’s will.
Political analysts say Accord faces an uphill battle in Anambra, where APGA has dominated politics for years. However, Accord leaders believe rising discontent with established parties may give them an opening.
“Nigerians, especially in Anambra, are tired of empty promises,” Fayose said. “We believe Accord can provide a true alternative.”
Background and outlook
Nigeria gained independence from Britain on Oct. 1, 1960. Since then, the country has experienced civil war, military rule, and transitions to democracy. At 65, it faces persistent challenges including unemployment, corruption, and weak infrastructure.
Despite these obstacles, Nigeria remains Africa’s most populous nation and its largest economy, with rich natural and human resources.
As political parties gear up for the 2025 elections, Accord’s push in Anambra highlights the growing competition among smaller parties seeking relevance in a system dominated by bigger rivals.
Observers say whether Accord can break through will depend on its ability to connect with voters at the grassroots level and present a credible message of change.
Looking ahead
Accord leaders said they will continue to mark national events like Independence Day by calling for renewal and accountability. They stressed that the party’s participation in Anambra is part of a broader strategy to build a nationwide presence.
“Our goal is not just to win elections but to build a Nigeria that works for everyone,” Fayose said. “At 65, Nigeria deserves leaders who are bold, honest, and ready to serve.”
As Nigeria reflects on its journey since independence, the Anambra poll will serve as one of the first tests of whether newer parties like Accord can turn public frustration into real political gains.

Benin Republic Foils Coup: Military Arrests 13 Soldiers Behind Failed Takeover.

The arrests came after a group of officers, calling themselves the Military Committee for Refoundation, appeared on national television on Sunday morning, claiming to have removed President Patrice Talon and dissolved all state institutions. The officers asserted that they had seized control of the government.
The presidency, however, confirmed that President Talon is safe and that loyalist forces are restoring order. Authorities described the coup attempt as the work of “a small group” with limited reach, adding that the city and the country remain secure.
Regional bloc ECOWAS has condemned the attempted takeover, describing it as a serious and unacceptable challenge to the democratic will of the people. In a statement issued in Abuja, the Commission called for strict adherence to the country’s Constitution and praised the efforts of the government and the Republican Army in regaining control. ECOWAS warned that the plot’s leaders would be held accountable for any loss of life or property arising from their actions and reaffirmed its full support for Benin, including potential deployment of the regional standby force if necessary.

Separately, Atiku’s Senior Political Assistant, Olarenwaju, attributed the former Vice President’s actions against Jonathan in 2015 to a breach of a gentleman’s agreement. Speaking during an Space discussion titled “APC Must Go,” Olarenwaju explained that his alignment with Atiku was motivated by a broader vision for Nigeria’s progress. He said, “Most of the answers I’m going to give tonight are not just based on my deliberations with Atiku, they are based on my desire for a better Nigeria. At the end of the day, if Nigeria is better, my life is better and easier as a Nigerian. So I only find myself with Atiku; in 2015, I didn’t find myself with Atiku, I found myself on the side of Goodluck Jonathan.”
