SAFA Pleads for Public Support as Sports Minister Launches Probe

South Africa’s soccer body is appealing for public support as the sports minister investigates allegations of mismanagement and poor governance within the federation.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The South African Football Association (SAFA) said this week it is under intense scrutiny after Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie announced a formal probe into the federation’s operations. The investigation comes after growing complaints about financial irregularities, leadership disputes and the declining performance of national teams.

McKenzie said his ministry had received repeated concerns from players, coaches and stakeholders about how SAFA is being run. He pledged that the probe will be “thorough and transparent,” aimed at restoring confidence in the country’s most popular sport.

“We cannot allow South African football to collapse because of bad leadership,” McKenzie said. “Our players and fans deserve accountability.”

SAFA, in response, has urged South Africans not to lose faith in the organization. Officials admitted the inquiry could expose weaknesses but insisted that the body is committed to reforms.

“We ask the people of South Africa to stand with us during this difficult time,” SAFA said in a statement. “We are ready to cooperate fully with the minister’s office and will provide all information needed.”

The controversy comes at a sensitive time for South African soccer. Bafana Bafana, the men’s national team, has struggled in recent years to qualify for major tournaments. The women’s national team, Banyana Banyana, earned praise after reaching the 2023 Women’s World Cup, but tensions between players and SAFA over pay disputes made headlines.

Critics argue that the problems run deeper than results on the pitch. Reports have pointed to issues with funding, stalled development programs and lack of grassroots investment. Several provincial football associations have accused SAFA leadership of ignoring calls for transparency.

Sports analysts say the probe could lead to sweeping changes in how soccer is managed in South Africa. “This is a turning point,” said football commentator Mpho Letsholonyane. “Either SAFA accepts reform and rebuilds its reputation, or the crisis will continue.”

The federation has faced criticism before. In 2021, former SAFA officials were accused of mishandling sponsorship money, though no charges were filed. Calls for leadership renewal have grown louder since then, with some demanding the resignation of senior executives.

For many South Africans, soccer is more than a sport. It is a symbol of unity, especially after the country hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Fans fear that ongoing scandals could damage the game’s future and discourage investment from sponsors.

“I just want to see our national team win again,” said Johannesburg supporter Themba Dlamini. “But we also want leaders we can trust.”

The investigation will include financial audits, interviews with stakeholders and reviews of past management decisions, according to the sports ministry. A report is expected in the coming months.

For now, SAFA’s leadership remains in place. But pressure is mounting from both government and the public for greater accountability. The federation has promised to introduce stronger governance measures, including independent oversight committees.

Despite the crisis, SAFA said it will continue preparing the national teams for upcoming international fixtures. The men’s team is scheduled to play World Cup qualifiers later this year, while the women’s side is set to begin their Olympic campaign.

McKenzie emphasized that the goal of the probe is not to punish but to rebuild. “We must fix South African football for the next generation,” he said. “This investigation is the first step.”

As the process unfolds, South Africans are watching closely. The outcome could decide the future of the sport in a country where soccer is loved in every community, from small townships to packed stadiums.

2027: ‘Leave Election Matters, Focus On Insecurity’ – Sowore Tackles Defence Minister Musa.

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has criticised Defence Minister Christopher Musa over his assurance that security agencies would remain neutral during the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Sowore accused Musa of being biased in favour of President Bola Tinubu, questioning whether the minister could guarantee impartiality during the electoral process.

In a post on X, the activist described Musa as a “loudmouth” and alleged that he had failed in his responsibilities as a military officer. He urged the defence minister to concentrate on addressing Nigeria’s security challenges rather than making promises about the 2027 elections.

Sowore’s remarks followed comments by Musa after a meeting with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday, during which the minister assured Nigerians that security agencies would act professionally and ensure voters were not intimidated.

Reacting to the minister’s statement, Sowore wrote: “This retired loudmouth, Christopher Musa, who failed in his duties as a serving General in the Nigerian Army is now here promising free and fair elections in 2027, when he is, in fact, a partisan hack for Tinubu. He should leave 2027 alone and face insecurity.”

Musa had spoken to journalists after meeting Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, where he was accompanied by heads of security agencies.

The minister explained that the meeting was convened to brief the President on the country’s security situation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to Musa, Tinubu wants the elections to be free, fair and credible, with security agencies expected to maintain professionalism and prevent intimidation of voters.

However, Sowore questioned the minister’s ability to guarantee the neutrality of security operatives, alleging that his political disposition could undermine confidence in the assurances given ahead of the polls.

Political Shake-Up: Gombe PDP Governorship Aspirant Defects To APC Amid Pantami’s Entry.

A former governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Gombe State, Abdulkadir Hamma Saleh, has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 governorship election.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Hamma Saleh, who contested the PDP governorship ticket against former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, announced his decision in a press statement made available to journalists in Gombe.

Following his defection, the former aspirant called on his supporters across the state to join him in the APC and support the party’s candidates in the 2027 general elections.

His decision comes amid controversy surrounding the PDP governorship ticket in Gombe State. Pantami’s initial emergence as the party’s candidate was challenged in court, prompting a rerun of the governorship primary election.

Meanwhile, former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, has declared that the PDP remains the only political party to have survived the collapse of other parties since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999.

Lamido, a founding member of the PDP, expressed confidence in the party’s resilience, insisting that it had remained relevant despite the political changes that have shaped the country over the years.

He made the remarks during the inauguration of the PDP Campaign Council at the party’s state headquarters in Dutse, Jigawa State.

According to the former governor, the PDP has endured challenges that have weakened or eliminated other political parties since the beginning of the Fourth Republic.

“Since 1999, almost all political parties have collapsed, leaving the PDP as the only surviving party to date.

“It has seen yesterday, today and, by the grace of God, it will see tomorrow,” Lamido said.

The former governor also urged Nigerians not to repeat what he described as the mistake of voting for the APC in previous elections.

He advised voters to assess the achievements of previous PDP administrations alongside the performance of the current APC-led government before deciding which party to support in the 2027 general elections.

Lamido maintained that Nigerians should carefully evaluate the records of both administrations before making their electoral choices.

“I believe Nigerians have learnt from their mistakes. Therefore, they must critically examine the achievements of previous administrations under the PDP and compare them with those of the current administration before deciding who should lead them,” he said.

He further accused the APC-led government of failing to meet the expectations of Nigerians, arguing that the country and Jigawa State required experienced and capable leaders to tackle their numerous challenges.

Lamido also raised concerns about the condition of healthcare and education in Jigawa State, alleging that both sectors had deteriorated under the current administration.

“Today, Jigawa is facing serious challenges in accessing quality healthcare. Hospitals lack adequate medical services and essential drugs, while the education sector continues to deteriorate,” he said.

Despite the challenges facing the party, Lamido assured PDP supporters that it was prepared to campaign vigorously for its candidates in the 2027 elections.

He said the party would contest positions at all levels, including the presidency, National Assembly and state Houses of Assembly.

The former governor also pledged that the PDP would conduct peaceful campaigns, avoiding insults, intimidation and personal attacks against political opponents.

According to Lamido, the party’s priority is to restore good governance and rebuild public confidence in Nigeria’s political leadership.

‘Pete Edochie Has Pride In His Blood, Cannot Pay Homage To Elders That Made Him’ – Actor Kola Olaiya

Veteran Nollywood actor Kola Olaiya has accused his colleague, Pete Edochie, of being overly proud and failing to acknowledge the contributions of senior theatre practitioners who helped lay the foundation for the Nigerian entertainment industry.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Olaiya made the allegation during an interview with Oyinmomo TV, where he argued that Edochie should recognise the achievements of veteran entertainers who had established themselves in the profession long before the celebrated actor began his career.

He specifically mentioned the late theatre icon Hubert Ogunde, whose contributions to Nigerian theatre and filmmaking predated Edochie’s entry into the industry.

According to Olaiya, Ogunde ventured into theatre in 1944 after leaving the police force and had already produced films and recorded popular songs before Edochie was born.

The veteran actor argued that although Edochie might consider himself without a senior within his own ethnic group in the South-East, such a claim could not reasonably apply to the entire Nigerian entertainment industry.

Speaking during the interview, Olaiya said he had known Edochie for a long time and believed pride was responsible for his alleged reluctance to acknowledge the elders who contributed to his rise.

“I have known him for long that pride is in his blood. That is why he cannot pay homage to the elders that made him.

“Ogunde had been acting before Pete was born. After that, some people like Oyin Adejobi, Duro Ladipo, Kola Ogunmola, were joining. Where was Pete Edochie then?

“If Pete says in his own tribe, he doesn’t have a boss, I wouldn’t know, but here in the whole Nigeria, no,” Olaiya stated.

The actor also reflected on his professional relationship with Ogunde, describing the late theatre pioneer as a father figure and mentor who played a significant role in shaping his personal life and acting career.

Olaiya’s comments have drawn attention to the contributions of early Nigerian theatre practitioners and the importance of recognising the pioneers whose work helped shape the country’s modern entertainment industry.
