Nigeria Records Fastest Economic Growth in Four Years With 4.23% GDP Rise

Nigeria’s economy grew by 4.23% in the second quarter of 2025, the fastest pace in four years, President Bola Tinubu announced Friday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The growth marks a major rebound for Africa’s largest economy, which has faced years of challenges including inflation, low oil revenues, and the lingering effects of global economic shocks.

Tinubu described the latest gross domestic product (GDP) numbers as proof that his government’s reforms are starting to work.

“This growth shows that Nigeria is on the right path,” the president said in a statement. “We are seeing results from our policies in energy, agriculture, and infrastructure. It is a sign of confidence in our economy.”

Strongest Growth Since 2021

According to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the 4.23% expansion is the strongest quarterly performance since 2021, when Nigeria began recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic. The growth rate also surpasses the 3.1% recorded in the first quarter of 2025.

Analysts say the new figures are encouraging, but warn that economic pressure remains high for many Nigerians. Inflation, which recently stood at more than 22%, continues to push up food and fuel prices. Unemployment also remains a challenge, especially for young people.

Still, experts note that a sustained growth trend could help reduce poverty and attract more foreign investment.

Key Drivers of Growth

The NBS report shows that agriculture and telecommunications were among the strongest contributors to the economy in the second quarter. Oil production, long a key driver of Nigeria’s economy, also saw a modest recovery after months of decline caused by theft and underinvestment.

Manufacturing and services posted solid gains, supported by stronger domestic demand and government investments in power and transport.

“The broad-based nature of this growth is a positive sign,” said economist Chinedu Okeke. “It means the economy is not just relying on oil but is also being supported by other sectors.”

Reforms and Challenges

Since taking office in May 2023, Tinubu has pushed a series of economic reforms aimed at stabilizing the naira, improving revenue, and boosting investor confidence. His government removed fuel subsidies, unified the exchange rate, and pledged major investments in infrastructure.

These moves were praised by international lenders such as the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. But they also triggered short-term pain for ordinary Nigerians, as fuel and transport costs rose sharply.

“The reforms were tough but necessary,” said finance minister Wale Edun. “We are now seeing the benefits. Growth is rising, and we expect more progress in the months ahead.”

Impact on Nigerians

Despite the positive GDP numbers, many Nigerians say they are yet to feel the impact in their daily lives. Rising prices of food, rent, and electricity have left households struggling to keep up.

“It is good to hear the economy is growing, but my salary has not increased,” said Lagos resident Aisha Bello. “We need jobs and affordable food before we can believe things are better.”

The government says it is working on programs to ease the pressure, including new agricultural initiatives to boost food supply and social investment schemes targeting vulnerable families.

Looking Ahead

Economists say Nigeria must maintain steady reforms and ensure that growth translates into real benefits for its people.

“If this growth continues for the next few quarters, Nigeria could see a stronger recovery,” said Okeke. “But the government must focus on inflation and job creation to make sure ordinary Nigerians feel the gains.”

Tinubu said his administration will continue working to build a stable and inclusive economy.

“Our goal is not just growth in numbers,” he said. “It is growth that improves lives, creates opportunities, and secures Nigeria’s future.”

With the 4.23% growth in the second quarter, Nigeria now stands at its most promising economic position in years. The challenge will be to keep the momentum while addressing inflation and unemployment, ensuring that the benefits of growth reach all citizens.

2027: ‘Leave Election Matters, Focus On Insecurity’ – Sowore Tackles Defence Minister Musa.

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has criticised Defence Minister Christopher Musa over his assurance that security agencies would remain neutral during the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Sowore accused Musa of being biased in favour of President Bola Tinubu, questioning whether the minister could guarantee impartiality during the electoral process.

In a post on X, the activist described Musa as a “loudmouth” and alleged that he had failed in his responsibilities as a military officer. He urged the defence minister to concentrate on addressing Nigeria’s security challenges rather than making promises about the 2027 elections.

Sowore’s remarks followed comments by Musa after a meeting with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday, during which the minister assured Nigerians that security agencies would act professionally and ensure voters were not intimidated.

Reacting to the minister’s statement, Sowore wrote: “This retired loudmouth, Christopher Musa, who failed in his duties as a serving General in the Nigerian Army is now here promising free and fair elections in 2027, when he is, in fact, a partisan hack for Tinubu. He should leave 2027 alone and face insecurity.”

Musa had spoken to journalists after meeting Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, where he was accompanied by heads of security agencies.

The minister explained that the meeting was convened to brief the President on the country’s security situation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to Musa, Tinubu wants the elections to be free, fair and credible, with security agencies expected to maintain professionalism and prevent intimidation of voters.

However, Sowore questioned the minister’s ability to guarantee the neutrality of security operatives, alleging that his political disposition could undermine confidence in the assurances given ahead of the polls.

Political Shake-Up: Gombe PDP Governorship Aspirant Defects To APC Amid Pantami’s Entry.

A former governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Gombe State, Abdulkadir Hamma Saleh, has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 governorship election.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Hamma Saleh, who contested the PDP governorship ticket against former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, announced his decision in a press statement made available to journalists in Gombe.

Following his defection, the former aspirant called on his supporters across the state to join him in the APC and support the party’s candidates in the 2027 general elections.

His decision comes amid controversy surrounding the PDP governorship ticket in Gombe State. Pantami’s initial emergence as the party’s candidate was challenged in court, prompting a rerun of the governorship primary election.

Meanwhile, former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, has declared that the PDP remains the only political party to have survived the collapse of other parties since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999.

Lamido, a founding member of the PDP, expressed confidence in the party’s resilience, insisting that it had remained relevant despite the political changes that have shaped the country over the years.

He made the remarks during the inauguration of the PDP Campaign Council at the party’s state headquarters in Dutse, Jigawa State.

According to the former governor, the PDP has endured challenges that have weakened or eliminated other political parties since the beginning of the Fourth Republic.

“Since 1999, almost all political parties have collapsed, leaving the PDP as the only surviving party to date.

“It has seen yesterday, today and, by the grace of God, it will see tomorrow,” Lamido said.

The former governor also urged Nigerians not to repeat what he described as the mistake of voting for the APC in previous elections.

He advised voters to assess the achievements of previous PDP administrations alongside the performance of the current APC-led government before deciding which party to support in the 2027 general elections.

Lamido maintained that Nigerians should carefully evaluate the records of both administrations before making their electoral choices.

“I believe Nigerians have learnt from their mistakes. Therefore, they must critically examine the achievements of previous administrations under the PDP and compare them with those of the current administration before deciding who should lead them,” he said.

He further accused the APC-led government of failing to meet the expectations of Nigerians, arguing that the country and Jigawa State required experienced and capable leaders to tackle their numerous challenges.

Lamido also raised concerns about the condition of healthcare and education in Jigawa State, alleging that both sectors had deteriorated under the current administration.

“Today, Jigawa is facing serious challenges in accessing quality healthcare. Hospitals lack adequate medical services and essential drugs, while the education sector continues to deteriorate,” he said.

Despite the challenges facing the party, Lamido assured PDP supporters that it was prepared to campaign vigorously for its candidates in the 2027 elections.

He said the party would contest positions at all levels, including the presidency, National Assembly and state Houses of Assembly.

The former governor also pledged that the PDP would conduct peaceful campaigns, avoiding insults, intimidation and personal attacks against political opponents.

According to Lamido, the party’s priority is to restore good governance and rebuild public confidence in Nigeria’s political leadership.

‘Pete Edochie Has Pride In His Blood, Cannot Pay Homage To Elders That Made Him’ – Actor Kola Olaiya

Veteran Nollywood actor Kola Olaiya has accused his colleague, Pete Edochie, of being overly proud and failing to acknowledge the contributions of senior theatre practitioners who helped lay the foundation for the Nigerian entertainment industry.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Olaiya made the allegation during an interview with Oyinmomo TV, where he argued that Edochie should recognise the achievements of veteran entertainers who had established themselves in the profession long before the celebrated actor began his career.

He specifically mentioned the late theatre icon Hubert Ogunde, whose contributions to Nigerian theatre and filmmaking predated Edochie’s entry into the industry.

According to Olaiya, Ogunde ventured into theatre in 1944 after leaving the police force and had already produced films and recorded popular songs before Edochie was born.

The veteran actor argued that although Edochie might consider himself without a senior within his own ethnic group in the South-East, such a claim could not reasonably apply to the entire Nigerian entertainment industry.

Speaking during the interview, Olaiya said he had known Edochie for a long time and believed pride was responsible for his alleged reluctance to acknowledge the elders who contributed to his rise.

“I have known him for long that pride is in his blood. That is why he cannot pay homage to the elders that made him.

“Ogunde had been acting before Pete was born. After that, some people like Oyin Adejobi, Duro Ladipo, Kola Ogunmola, were joining. Where was Pete Edochie then?

“If Pete says in his own tribe, he doesn’t have a boss, I wouldn’t know, but here in the whole Nigeria, no,” Olaiya stated.

The actor also reflected on his professional relationship with Ogunde, describing the late theatre pioneer as a father figure and mentor who played a significant role in shaping his personal life and acting career.

Olaiya’s comments have drawn attention to the contributions of early Nigerian theatre practitioners and the importance of recognising the pioneers whose work helped shape the country’s modern entertainment industry.
