Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, the ICA President, Mr. Chinedu Okafor, described the event as “well-coordinated, inspiring, and a true reflection of Igbo pride and identity.” He said the celebration strengthened cultural bonds and promoted understanding among Igbo people living in the capital.
“2025 Igbo Day was a remarkable event. We saw Igbo youths, elders, and community leaders come together to celebrate our culture. The planning and execution by Ohanaeze Ndigbo deserve recognition,” Okafor said.
According to ICA officials, the event included cultural performances, traditional dances, Igbo music, and displays of local crafts. Speakers also highlighted Igbo contributions to Nigeria’s economy, politics, and social development.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, has organized Igbo Day for several years to promote unity, preserve cultural heritage, and inspire younger generations to embrace their roots. This year’s edition focused on youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, and community development.
“Celebrating Igbo Day is not just about festivities; it is about inspiring our people to work together, respect our traditions, and contribute positively to society,” said Mrs. Nkechi Uzochukwu, a senior member of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.
The ICA also urged other Igbo organizations and communities across Nigeria to support similar initiatives. According to the association, such celebrations strengthen cultural identity, encourage social cohesion, and provide a platform for dialogue on issues affecting the Igbo people.
Community members attending the event praised the organizers for creating a warm and inclusive environment. Many expressed hope that future celebrations would continue to focus on youth engagement and development.
“Events like Igbo Day remind us of who we are and where we come from. It also motivates us to give back to our community,” said Mr. Emeka Obi, a young entrepreneur who attended the event.
Experts say cultural celebrations like Igbo Day play a key role in preserving Nigeria’s diverse heritage. They provide a platform for education, networking, and community-building, while also helping to bridge generational gaps.
The 2025 Igbo Day in Abuja also included panel discussions on economic opportunities, education, and social welfare. Participants discussed strategies for empowering Igbo youths and fostering business ventures within the community.
Looking forward, the ICA encouraged more collaborative efforts between Ohanaeze Ndigbo and local Igbo associations. The goal, officials said, is to ensure that cultural celebrations are not only festive but also impactful, promoting long-term social and economic growth.
“As we celebrate our heritage, we must also think about how to build a stronger and more prosperous community. Unity, culture, and education are our tools,” Okafor said.
The ICA concluded by reiterating its commitment to supporting cultural events and advocating for programs that benefit the Igbo people in Abuja and across Nigeria.
