Onitsha Prepares for 2025 Ofala Festival With Cultural Pride and Global Attention

Published

The bustling commercial city of Onitsha is preparing for the 2025 Ofala Festival, a colorful celebration that draws thousands of visitors each year to honor the Obi of Onitsha and showcase Igbo culture to the world.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The annual festival, scheduled for October, is one of the most important traditional events in southeastern Nigeria. Organizers say this year’s edition will be bigger, with expanded cultural displays, international guests, and renewed focus on tourism.

The Ofala Festival marks the end of the Igbo year and the beginning of a new one. It also celebrates the authority and leadership of the Obi, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, who is regarded as the spiritual and cultural leader of the Onitsha people. During the event, the Obi appears in full royal regalia, blessing his subjects and reaffirming unity.

Local chiefs, masquerades, dance groups, and musicians perform at the festival, turning Onitsha into a center of pageantry and tradition. Traders, artisans, and hotels also benefit from the influx of visitors.

Chief Patrick Okafor, a member of the planning committee, said preparations are in full swing. “We expect a large turnout this year. The Ofala is not just for Onitsha people, it is for everyone who appreciates culture and heritage,” he said.

The Anambra State government has pledged support to ensure the festival runs smoothly. Officials say security will be tight and infrastructure will be improved to accommodate the crowds.

“This festival is a major tourism asset,” said Anambra Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Mrs. Ifeoma Anozie. “It brings together Nigerians from different regions and also attracts foreigners. We are working with stakeholders to make sure 2025 Ofala is safe, peaceful, and successful.”

Historians trace the origins of Ofala to ancient Igbo traditions of renewal and thanksgiving. The word “Ofala” comes from “Ilo Mmọnwụ” meaning “the authority of the land.” It has survived colonial rule, modern changes, and urbanization to remain a symbol of identity and pride for Onitsha indigenes.

Over the years, the festival has also gained international recognition. Cultural troupes from the United States, United Kingdom, and other countries have performed in past editions. This year, organizers say they are expecting delegations from the Caribbean and parts of Europe.

For residents, the festival is more than a cultural event. It is also a time of reunion, when families return home to celebrate with relatives. Markets and streets are decorated, and local businesses record booming sales.

“I travel home every year for Ofala,” said Chidinma Nwosu, an Onitsha native living in Lagos. “It is not only about the tradition but also about seeing old friends, reconnecting with family, and feeling the spirit of community.”

The Obi of Onitsha, who has reigned since 2002, has described the festival as a bridge between tradition and modernity. In his speeches, he often emphasizes peace, unity, and development for the city and the state.

In recent years, the Ofala has also been used as a platform for social messages. Health campaigns, youth empowerment programs, and cultural exhibitions have been part of the celebrations. This year, organizers plan to highlight environmental awareness and the need to protect the Niger River, which runs through Onitsha.

Analysts say the Ofala Festival is an example of how traditional culture can support tourism and economic growth in Nigeria. With better organization and promotion, they argue, the festival could compete with other global cultural events.

For now, residents are focused on the excitement that builds every year. Hotels are already reporting early bookings, and transport companies expect increased demand. The sound of drums, the sight of masquerades, and the presence of the Obi will once again make Onitsha the center of Igbo culture.

“The Ofala is our pride,” said Okafor, the planning committee member. “It is the heartbeat of Onitsha, and in 2025, we are ready to welcome the world.”

Factional Crisis Rocks ADC In Akwa Ibom As Party Splits Deepen.

Barely a year after its inauguration in Akwa Ibom State, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been plunged into a deep factional crisis.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Multiple factions are now locked in a struggle for control of the party, leaving members uncertain about the legitimate leadership structure.

One faction is led by John Akpanudodehe, a former National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), while another is headed by the embattled state chairman, Dick Duke.

Although the leader of a third faction could not be immediately confirmed, findings indicate that another group also exists within the party.

Sources further suggest that the Akpanudodehe-led faction is seeking to remove the current chairman through a recently held congress that has sparked controversy.

In response, Dick Duke convened a stakeholders’ meeting over the weekend, where he rejected the legitimacy of the said congress.

He said the party had formally written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to distance itself from the exercise, citing a subsisting court order.

According to him, his tenure as state chairman is still valid until May, and any congress conducted before then would be unlawful.

Duke added that the party would only proceed with proper congresses after the expiration of his tenure and the resolution of legal issues, in line with due process.
